Re: Yosemite

So if it still looks like we can fly next year, I'm going to give a shot at getting the group campsite there for a weekend in July. Maybe the weekend of 18-19 near the new moon. The first day (and only day, actually) to do that is March 15. I think if people could rely on having a campsite no matte...

My vario says the landing position was 34.357367, -118.455733. This looks accurate on Google Earth to me.

Here's what happened. It's kind-of embarrassing to lay it out, because it's all really a bit stupid. I wrote down a pretty detailed account of everything I remembered, but I'm going to summarize here. One contributing factor that occurred before the flight is that I had spent a lot of time flying we...

For those that don't know, I was the pilot involved. I plan to write a little about the series of bad decisions that led to the event once I've reflected on it a little further.

Forced hillside landing

July 7, 2018, approximately 4 pm. An H4 pilot with around 220 hours experience, mostly at Kagel, encountered strong winds in a known venturi location and was forced to land on the hillside. The pilot was uninjured, and there was only minor sail damage to the glider. Joe and Andy drove out from the L...

Wow. Thanks for the report. I'm glad you're okay, Richard. Gliders can be fixed.

I'd encourage people to do this. Ham radio is very much like hang gliding, in as much as the government (FCC in their case, FAA in ours) has delegated running the use of a segment of a resource to the recreational community involved. They can lose their playground just as much as we can lose ours, a...

Yes, it's mine. I'll most likely grab it on Saturday or possibly have someone grab it for me on Sunday.

That's very admirable but does not help your landings.
Which is why we have to do it again, soon!

Bumping this thread as a reminder and for people who haven't seen it before, and because it just happened to me. Yesterday I had the same assembly error, fortunately discovered when I picked up the partially assembled glider to move it out of someone's way. I'm pretty sure I would have caught it at ...

Broadcasting is taking more CPU than I think we have. OK, not that I think, that I know. The broadcasting is too CPU extensive for the old computer I put in there to get the whole thing going. I'll get a better computer in the near future. So for the time being, the best thing to do is look at the ...
