Re: Crestline tomorrow 9/28/22 (Wednesday)
It was pretty darned good. I got to 10,100+ feet at Pine Flats the first time I was there around 1:45. Then 8k+ a half hour later. Then it got less high, but I had no trouble getting to 7k. I did land early (after just under 3 hours) because a T-storm with lightning etc. was setting up over Yucaipa....

Crestline tomorrow 9/28/22 (Wednesday)
For what it is worth, the current forecast for Crestline tomorrow is Stellar! 9-11k altitudes!?!
Yes, it is only a forecast, but I'm taking off from my weekday stuff to go fly!

Blade vario for sale - Virtually new
Hey all, I bought a new Blade vario, which is awesome. But, I cannot see it properly, as my eyes have gotten too old. :-( I worked out a deal to swap it for a 6030, but the owner of the 6030 would rather I find a buyer for the blade. I don't know the price, I'm just the middleman. BUT, he's certainl...

Re: A question about Towers
Thanks Rob. Front or back: I was asking if our lock was on the road from the park - I didn't think so, that road is not really for cars any more... I've gone up the front (past the park) on my bike, and the ranger said that the gate by Bear Divide closed early, so I wasn't sure we still had a lock o...

A question about Towers
Do we still have access through the gate at towers?
Is the code the same as before? (The one on the members only section of the website.)
Which road is our lock on? The front or the back? (I assume the one that comes from Bear Divide, but just want to be sure.)
Thank you!

Spring Air Festival - I will miss you all
I had planned on coming out and joining my friends at the Spring Air Festival this weekend. Sadly, I have to miss it. My aunt is ill, and I need to go visit her in San Diego while it is still possible. And I'll get to see my sisters as well, since they will be there doing the same thing. I hope all ...

Re: 51st Anniversary of Otto Meet - May 23, 2022
So what time window are we presuming this will be? I live quite a distance away, and my kids might be in school, so it matters to me the hours of the event. Clearly, I can come and go as I please, but it would be nice to know when others will be there.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Re: Near midair-collision over Kagel ridge on Sunday 12/19/2021
Lessons learned: 1. Don't assume that because you are alone, you will remain alone. I was concentrating on thermalling efficiently, and while I was looking in the correct direction while turning (i.e. towards my direction of travel) I was focused more on the position of my wingtip relative to the h...

I also look at shadows on the ground when appropriate. This doesn't work all that often, but when it does, it makes a huge difference.

Forest closed, but Ave S open
Avenue S is outside of the forest(s). Monday, 9/20/21 looks to be soarable there. Sadly, I cannot go despite living nearby, but I thought I'd remind people that it was available and outside of the forest closure area.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Walts Point Launch issues
TFR near Mount Whitney right now. (As of 6/26/2021) Fire fighting. Also, many helicopters flying in and out of Lone Pine Airport. Walts launch is outside of the restricted area, but please note the image of the no-fly zone attached (The largest red circle.) I decided not to fly yesterday, as I didn'...

I'm glad you are OK, Vrezh!. Good luck on figuring out what's going on so you might be back in the air. If you cannot, then I wish you the best after your flying career. I'm rooting for you!

Our friend, Jim Mercadante passed away on Sunday of Covid-19, as did his uncle (within 2 hours of each other). Jim was a good friend to me, and we spent many days riding bikes, flying and such. I couldn't have done some of my best flights without him as my driver - He gave up flying time so that I c...

Walts Point 10/9/2020
I had a surprisingly fun flight from Walt’s Point in the Owens Valley Friday the 9th of October. I had no driver, and Covid rules applied, so I dropped my eBike at the bottom and drove to launch. I launched just after noon, and got to 12,600 feet several times. I could have gotten higher, but I was ...

Re: Avenue S seems to be outside of Angeles National Forest
The Lake Fire was near there. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/maps/6953/ Yes it was. And there is (at least as of Thursday) a TFR. But, the area around and between Launch and LZ are outside the forest and outside the TFR. The border of the TFR for the Bobcat fire also doesn't affect Avenue S. Bot...

By the way, according to the Crestline forum, all national parks in California are closed now.
But Ave S is outside of them.

Avenue S seems to be outside of Angeles National Forest
Therefore, it should be open. With both Kagel and Crestline closed, and Santa Anas here, I thought I'd mention the fact that Avenue S appears to be outside the closure. The air is (somewhat) better too, at least during the Santa Ana. When the wind switches back, it'll be worse there, but you won't c...
