Hook In Check! This Tandem Tourist Almost Bought it!

A buddy of mine just sent me this. I'm amazed that the guy is able to hang on as long as he did. Unbelievable. Hang Check/Hook In Check Always Always Always!

Landing in the Crop Field

If I could add my two cents here Greg. To be fair, landing in the heat of the day at 4,000 ft in no wind would be challenging for most pilots. The field was wet and the crop made running it out difficult. You and the glider walked away relatively unscathed, and so we are thankful for that. The take ...

Owens

I just got an invitation to fly to Chicago for a family reunion on the 22nd of Sept. I am seriously thinking about making that, in which case I would not be going out to the Owens for the WE of the 22nd.

Labor Day WE in the Owens

Some of us Sylmartians are gathering in the Owens this Labor Day WE to test our skills against the dreaded beast that lives above 10K. All H-4s and long hour H-3s are invited. Camping and camaraderie will abound. Pilots should bring a locator and emergency first aid kit, along with cold weather gear...

Forced Landing

Glad you are OK, Terry. Getting caught in the venturi of a canyon as an HG or PG pilot is always challenging and rarely ends well. Glad it ended well for you and we look forward to hearing the details so that we can all learn. All the best.

SOLD! My Falcon 3 195

I've been storing it at the beach but using it hardly at all. Time for some lucky pilot to take on this well used Falcon 3 195. Don't ask me how many hours are on it cause truthfully I have no idea. Let's just say she's been around the corner and down the block a few times. She's launched Sylmar, Cr...

Crestline Launch

Jonathan, you are correct. This was Crestline launch, not Marshall. I've launched Crestline many times before, but never had an issue. This one caught me a bit off guard, but my instinct for survival kicked in and I was able to accelerate the last part of the run.

To my fellow pilots - guard up!

Radio Repair and Custom PTT kits just down the road!

Good news for Sylmartians! I discovered an excellent alternative to the radio guy up in Washington who's slow as a slug. There's a place just down the 210 Fwy in La Crascenta called K.R. Nida Communications. KR Nida Communications, 818-957-1248, rnida@krnida.com www.krnida.com Richard Nida is the ow...

First Aid Kit

Wow. Kudos to Janyce! I'm trying to locate a used but functional AED to add to the collection.

Janyce, if you know of something we are missing, please let me know and I will find it.

I've created a Facebook page for general communication ahead of the event. Please join if you have not already done so. Malury has posted some good pics there as well.

King Mountain

Malury, thanks for your the helpful advice. It will be super hot. John is attempting to have a hangar completed by then, but he sounded 50/50 on it and made no guarantees. Pilots are advised to bring their own versions of shelter from the sun. He has offered the area surrounding the glider port to c...

King Mountain and the Total Eclipse

I just got off the phone with John Kangas, the head honcho at King Mountain. He's all for a gaggle of Sylmartians coming out for the days leading up to the Solar Eclipse, which occurs on Monday, the 21st of August at around 10:45 AM local. Here's the gist of our conversation: 1. He's happy to hear w...

Sticky Fingers

I got the gloves and the tape. Tried them out and they work great. I just ordered more tape to put on the down tubes. I had gloves from Home Depot that I used for years. They finally gave up the ghost, so I thought I'd try something more technical. The only draw-back: The gloves act like velcro. So ...

Sticky Fingers

I was out last Sunday, flying around in some excellent spring air conditions. After about 45 minutes of flying I decided to head in. The usual pattern, etc, but on final I was higher than normal. As I honked it in on my right down tube, my glove slipped off the aluminum tubing. I'm using some motocr...
