Remember that when you tune it it will be maximized for only one frequency. Move to one end or the other of the 2m band, and you change the length by several 1/10'ths of an inch. However, set it right for the middle of the band, and you'll get great reception (but not the "best") throughou...

Or use it to do a retreive when there is no road to where the pilot lands. Much easier than lugging the darned glider and gear on your shoulders.

I have one and have used it to retreive another pilot from far behind a locked gate.

This is highly likely to be the case.

I'm the least HAMstered of the club, but I can guess why we don't use J-poles. 1. Rubber-ducky are plenty for the line of sight we have when flying. 2. Power savings are negligible, as our flights aren't long enough to expend a full battery. Once you land, battery charging in the car is easy to do....

Thanks for the reminder Jonathan. You make a good point, and it is easy to forget that we fly in some of the busiest open airspace on the planet. A story, for those who are interested: Many years ago, I was flying from Horseshoe. There had only been a couple of pilots on launch, and I was ahead of a...

One tip: You need to stay opposite each other. That means that the paraglider will be making smaller circles, and you will be making larger ones. But the time it takes to make one circle will be the same for both of you. (You fly faster at thermalling speed than he does.) Of course, this only works ...

Cool. I just remember a long-time pilot flying a Falcon back there and ending up getting stuck. And he didn't even have the excuse of being a newbie... Didn't know you had a Sport 2. I remember I was back there once long ago (in an Aeros topless, I think). It was surprisingly difficult to get out. O...

Also, if it is windy (especially in a SS glider), you can get stuck back there.

Yep. That does make it easier. "When it doubt, pull in!" Of course, there are exceptions, but this should be your default setting. One exception: The ground is 2 feet away! ;-) All joking aside, it is really the case that the default option should be to pull in. Unfortunately, that's not w...

I generally stay away from Cajon Mtn unless I'm high. Not only can it be turbulent, but the venturi through the pass can trap pilots easily. Of course, there are some days when the wind is very light and it is just fine. But whatever it's doing over by Pine or Devore, it's generally windier/bumpier ...

Keep mine too, and apply to the Gazebo (or whatever.) 501c is a good idea. This is a good compromise. Old timers often objected to removing the initiation fee as unfair to them. This answers it quite nicely. And I suspect that the percentage of us who'll just donate it will be quite high. It was the...

One way to lose a flying site...

I found this on the OZ Report. It shows how one might go about annoying the locals over a seemingly small thing. Of course, it isn't a small thing, especially to the locals...

Mary and Karl were not only long-time friends of hang gliding in Sylmar, but were important players in the fight to keep us flying there. And they were truly nice people too.

Fly High, Mother Bird. We'll miss you.

There's a chute under that sweatshirt, right? :o

I notice, though that there is a wrist strap from the harness to his arm.

.... However, he has little interest in the inner life of hang gliders , which may be just as well, since he is possibly the least diplomatic personality in the sport, which is saying something..... No way is he the least diplomatic personality in the sport. He's certainly in that direction, I've s...

For what it's worth, I used to drive that way to work, and the area Johathan is indicating is more sloped than it looks from the photos and from the air. Probably doable, but there is what appears to be a better alternative just across the street. I've walked this field, but never landed there. http...

Good flight Greg.

I note that Greblo hasn't posted though. (Or I missed it.) I heard they went from Blackhawk to Vegas. Is that right?
