At least when I was flying single engine planes, the landing speed generally was a specific landing speed that the manufacturer specified; airspeed is airspeed, not ground speed. (at least that was with the pipers and cessnas that I flew.) Now in extreme turbulence, the manuvering speed was definit...

Is the rule: the more turbulence, the faster one should fly? I have heard it said that in extreme turbulence one should not fly very fast, as it can over-stress the glider? Is this true? In some sense, yes. But only in the sense that you shouldn't fly REALLY REALLY fast in turbulent air. If your gl...

What is the aviation rule for airspeed on final? If I remember right, it is: 1 1/2 times your stall speed + 1/2 the wind speed. And that's for airplanes with motors and aerodynamic controls. We have neither, so should perhaps fly even faster than that on final! Especially in stronger conditions and...

Jim (and all on the committee), First, thanks for all the hard work. I know that getting input from a group as independent-minded as hang glider pilots tend to be is never easy. We all tend to think that we are right and everyone else is wrong. I offer my thanks and appreciation. Now to my comments....

Glad to see folks are talking about this stuff. By the way, here's a trivia question: What are the two most important Cross Country skills. There is one that is far and away more important than all others, and the second one is far and away more important than numbers 3-gazillion. Hint: It isn't the...

A few years ago, I flew from Avenue L to the the West. I sank out near a Castle that had a close dirt airstrip. (Really, there is a castle there!) I landed on the dirt airstrip and didn't even get my harness off before one of the landowners came racing up in his surplus jeep. He had is hand on his g...

Thanks, Lynn. Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating. It is now clear that the odds of a safe launchable window when they want it are almost zero. It was too windy today, and tomorrow looks worse. So, I am offically chickening out. He who flys and runs away, lives to fly another day. Or somet...

On the day that Adam made his epic flight, I had been in town two days after a flying trip to Florida. I couldn't get away from work after being gone 2+ weeks. But I did make repeated complaints that it looked like the best day I'd seen in all my years of flying at Kagel. I told several folks that &...

I wouldn't venture to suggest knowing when you should and shouldn't go abroad to fly. However, one thing you should do is check the requirements in the country you plan on going to. Most have some sort of rating system, and you'd need to verify what THEY require. This is especially true in Europe an...

I'm the guy who does the parachute drop. The weather as of this moment looks pretty iffy. I will look at the weather on Friday before 8 pm and post here what we plan on doing. Currently, the forecast is for winds to be in the N-NNW direction and around 20. That's too strong and not NE enough. Howeve...

I'll bet it's really tough to get pictures of the gazebo from directly overhead without violating the rules. Not impossible, but really really hard. ;-) From over the H4 spot would be nice, though. Has anyone tried Google Earth? I bet they won't be detailed enough, but it's worth a try. I think Greb...

Lukens road conditions
Rob Sherwood and I attempted to get to the newly approved Lukens H4 launch on Saturday. There appear to be 3 (or 4?) roads to the top. We heard from Joe Greblo that the one nearest the LZ is under construction. So we went to the two that are off of Hwy 2. Both of these are still locked due to constr...

Here's an additional tip: Keep two tie-downs in your harness bag. Then if you go to another site to fly, you have them (if needed.) Why two? If you go XC and get offered a ride from someone with an appropriate vehicle, they usually don't have tie downs. It would be a shame to pass up a free ride bac...
