Please help Forest Service Sunday

Post by WingNutz »

Please help us out with a little elbow grease on Sunday.

The Forest Service has received a grant to use for putting up fences to keep off-road vehicles out of areas where they are not permitted to go, or where they have caused damage in the Angeles National Forest. Sunday, Patrick Hersey, the OHV Recreation Specialist (see contact info below) is running a work party to put up fencing to prevent reentry of off-road vehicles into the illegal moto-cross track halfway up Kagel Road. It will involve setting corner posts and possibly other fence posts. That probably means digging postholes, pouring concrete, making the posts plumb, etc. I don't know if they have a post hole augur.

Howard says that this doesn't mean that there is a plan to reopen Kagel Road to off-roaders, refrigerator dumpers, and construction debris litterers; it's just that the Forest Service has this dedicated money now, and want to use it instead of losing it.

I think it's a great opportunity to show up with a little teamwork for the L.A. Ranger District, which has been so friendly and helpful to us. Howard says that we can work a couple of hours, then go fly. Howard has come to have a keen sense of what makes us tick as volunteers.

I have a commitment out of town that will prevent me from taking part, but I'll do what I can in advance to help organize a work party.

The deal is to meet with Pat Hersey (see below) at 0830 on Sunday at the Little Tujunga Canyon Road Ranger Station. We should call him in advance with an estimated number of workers, so he can gear up for that number.

Is anyone else interested in going out Sunday morning to help install some fence posts?

Yes.

My driver and I will most probably attend. I think I will meet at the ranger station with glider on the rack ready to go. Once the digg'n is done and the maximum solar heating is reached... eat a packed sandwich at the launch and soar.

I'll see you there.

Do we have a head count so we can warn the rangers?

I don't know who is point on this one. Larry is going to be out of town, so the best thing to do would be post for a head count. And we still don't know what if any tools may be needed.

I believe the rangers will provide the tools. But, what they bring will depend on how many people they expect.

Post here if you're planning to go. I'll try to call the ranger station this afternoon with whatever headcount we have by then.

I left a message on the rangers' answering machine to expect at least 6 or 7 of us, with a possibility that a few others might show up as well.

Larry Chamblee left me a message today that the rangers will probably not have all the tools we need. He asked that we bring shovels, post hole diggers and digging bars (whatever they are). I have a post hole digger and will bring it along. I know we have plenty of shovels in our storage. I am not sure what digging bars are but bring them if you have them and we can raid the storage bin for whatever it has.
