Fred Waugh

Post by beemer »

Freddie passed away today after a decades long battle with cancer. He died quietly at home with his family. Fred began flying in the early 70's and took his last flight a year ago in Ojai at the age of 79. Fred was one of the fouding fathers of the 5S's. We will miss him.

Spent a lot of time hang driving during our Mosquito/Doodlebug days, I really enjoyed all the stories. I am saddened to hear of his passing, but relieved his pain is gone. The guy was a super hero on and off the screen. A real bad ass!

Fred and I shared many good times together. He will always be in my heart and I will really miss him. He was one of our sports pioneering spirits as he manufactured hang gliders and helmets under the Dynasoar name. Parker mountain was even nicknamed Dynasoar at one time because of him. Fly high Fred.

I asked him, "Jeez Fred, how do you become a stunt man?"

He said, "Well, I was a flyer in a trapeze act...."

The circus left town and Fred left with it.

A cool soul takes flight and a drop of moisture falls in the void.

My heartfelt condolences to all he has touched.

I had a lot of respect for Fred. A great man, a great pilot, and never an unkind word. I will miss him too.

Last year Fred came by the LZ and I got to have a conversation with him.
We went on about the 1970s and all the great TV shows. I mentioned I loved the Planet of the Apes and especially the TV series in 1974 season 1 episode 14 Up "Above the World So High" with the hang gliding scenes. At that point Fred told me he performed the stunts for the human actor. Fred went on about the filming location in Malibu but that is when I realized this was the last time I would ever see him.

I made an entry in imdb on his behalf today.
Waugh, Fred
