I can see planes land and take off at both from my office window. SMO is business as usual but LAX is in reverse (landing approach over the ocean, take off over the city). Strange given their proximity, no?

Yes, they reverse the runways at LAX when its blowing down. And on the north side runway landings are from the ocean in the early morning hours until 6:30, (runway 6), while at the same time takeoff on the south side runways (runways 25), are westbound.

So what you're saying is that if SMO does not reverse when it's blowing down then aircraft are taking off and landing downwind? I always thought that was an aircraft no-no.
