I had a student, Markus Raffel, back in January take a lesson at Dockweiler beach to work on his weight shift skills so he could fly a Otto Lilienthal replica glider. After the lesson he asked if I would be willing to help him test fly the glider at Dockweiler to work out some stability questions. He had the glider shipped from Germany to Pasadena where he was working at Cal Tech.I helped transport the glider to Dockweiler beach where many flights were flown making small changes in the trim to achieve pitch stability. The glider seemed to fly very nice but needed a taller hill or more wind.Eventually we drove the glider up to Marina beach,CA and Markus was able to get some footage for the Discovery channel showing the "Otto Lilienthal normal glider" flying from a 100' sand dune near Marina beach.The flights I made at Dockweiler beach on the glider were very short but were the most fun I have had flying at Dockweiler to this day. I felt like I was going back in time. Not sure when the footage will air on the Discovery channel but I will post on the fourm when I find out.
