Helicopter rescue, Walter landed behind the ridge

Post by dhmartens »

Walter landed behind the ridge today and the camp 9 helicopter was called in for a rescue. Another glider saw the landing and that Walter was moving but he still could have been injured. We watched from the LZ with binoculars and it seemed as if Walter was trying to evade capture by making his way down the trail up the mountain. Another very large black Sheriff helicopter was dispatched to the mountain as well as a small and a large fire truck down the road to the dam. They had him penned in and escape would be futile. I had an idea 10 of us could dress in the same helmet and clothes as Walter and go run around up there as decoys to aid in his escape(kidding). Finally the Black helicopter lowered a man down on a rope and dropped him off next to Walter and flew off. A few minutes later it came back and raise both men up and flew off to the hospital. We stayed in the LZ a few hours but still don't know his condition. His trek half way down the mountain reminded me of Paul Newman in "Cool hand Luke". The rescue response was very prompt and professional. We're lucky to have them.
