Does anyone have a formula for staying a safe distance from clouds?
The Windsports formula goes like this:
Caution: This technique works well for most beginner and intermediate gliders that have a lower max speed. For gliders that can easily fly faster than Vne (never exceed speed), this technique introduces other structural dangers.
1.) Make dive tests to find the maximum descent rate (still air conditions)
2.) Cut that figure in 1/2 and call this the "target figure"
3.) If you are below menacing clouds and your vario indicates "target figure" when climbing at minimum sink speed, pull in to stop climbing and fly a direction that gets you to the edge of the cloud where you can descend safely.
Obviously a more complete discussion of this would be helpful.
Does anyone else have a formula that they would like to share?
