Happy SHGA in 2006! -- What do you want it to be like??

Happy 2006! I signed up to be your new club Activities Director this year because it seemed like there was some organizing that could make things more fun -- people who wanted some events/club life and such, and people who would take initiative and put those things together. A couple of us had a bunch of success putting H2 trips together last year -- what a blast for those people. It just took getting the folks who wanted them and the people who could lead them together.

So, lets put some things together for the whole club! How about getting more organized, so we can do some fun things like a flying event with the
Crestline club that spans over multiple weekends and maybe sites -- best 2 out of 3 competition? I think we just need ways to get the word out (lets use this fabulous site a *whole* bunch more) about ideas at all stages -- things people would like, things people would take the lead and put together (as they see what people would like), and the details about the things themselves. There could be a lot more events and such -- if you have to work on a Saturday, you could still know that there is a barbeque starting at 5 in the LZ, who posted that they can make it, and show up for the Apres-Fly (I'm part Swiss). Sound fun?

So lets start by getting a (posted) discussion going here on this site about:
* how you'd like the club to be this year -- socially
* what activities/kinds of activities you'd like there to be
* what you'd like to jump in and organize now or later
* generally, how you'd like to help

On that last one, a few of us are about to get the word out about getting 10 people or so to help with littler parts of getting our web site to be a fun nexus of communication about what's going on, what happened, what will happen. There's a lot of good news floating around if you're lucky enough to catch it. And there's news that's *critical* to get out at times -- required to keep our Metro Area Flying Site (what an inharent conflict) operational.

Me and a couple of buddies have been on flying trips at least every other weekend since November. Wouldn't it be nice (and sensible) if we just posted onto the site "hey, a couple of us are going to try Ojai this Saturday, post here if you're up for it too". I flew so many hours in my Falcon range at Kagel last year that I'd like people to post that they're planning to fly Kagel Saturday morning, so we can schedule to be going up/flying together.

What do you want? Tell me, but tell me here so we can all get the vibe of the club. I'll be the one to help organize the organizers. Put your message as a reply (not a New Topic, which pushes down the other Event notices on this forum section).

I want to fly different locations including Crestline/Marshall, Ojai, Soboba, Pine, etc. I also plan on flying in Arizona - Mingus (south of Flagstaff), New Mexico (Grants, Sandia) - with or without the club.

While it might be "insulting" to some - the thought of driving 5 - 6 hours for a 12 minute sled ride seems downright stupid to me - regardless of the "scenic" value. If I'm going to take time off from work and endure a long drive I would far rather travel 7 - 8 hours to the Flagstaff area (Mingus, volcanos) and have the chance to actually stay up awhile. As for the "scenic" value - beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The rock formations of Sadona (sp ?) is suppose to be impressive.

If you are going to someplace I want to go - I'm more than willing to help.

I'd like to know where you've been going for the last few weeks seeing how the conditions pretty much "suck". And there's been no dicussion about your trips on the board to help or enlighten others about flying opportunities elsewhere.

From my perspective:
Looks like Friday is going to be a good maybe for Kagel. Better possiblities might be Ojai or SB. Conditions turn around pretty quick starting Saturday as the wind switches back to the N.

Day trips are what I like. Tow clinics, RLF signoffs, guided tour of new mountains. Mike Knapp has been talking about a scooter-tow day with Joe Greblo, minimum five people. Or just pick-up trips by experienced members where others could tag along if they organized their own truck and driver.

Back in the day when I was "proudly" part of Team Topa, we had an annual event at Pine. It was typically held in May usually close to the Memorial day weekend but we tried to have it coinside with a full moon if we could.

The Kagel crew would usually show up for at least one day. Kagelites have been absent from Pine over the last several years. We should change that. Many good flights were made from Pine last summer. Paraglider pilots were making 100 mile flights.

Flying Pine can be VERY rewarding but like all places it has it's hazards as well. The biggest "issue" is one of logistics. The fly-in was a camping/flying event. You need to take water because there is none on the mountain.

This is still far enough away that it's a possibility to organize. If the pre-dominace of the high pressure systems subside this spring then the conditions will probably be good for some record setting XC as well as plenty of opportunities for personal bests.

Look, all I am saying is that if the activities director or anyone else can get some hot lookin' chics out there then there might be some better landings.

Who wants to fly down and pound it in front of some hot poon....I know I don't.

Vote YES to prop 68+1 (hot chics in the LZ) and thank you for your support.
