Southern California XC League Cup Series

Post by Chip »

I'm looking to get some feedback and interest generated here for this kind of competition. But need some thoughts and ideas how well received it might be. For the most part it's for H3's and H4's. Many people would like to see SoCal competition return to it's birthplace. Having a team championship among competing clubs may be a way to help foster that.

Please feel free to comment, no matter what your experience level.

Southern California XC League Cup Series

Proposal:
The Southern California Cross Country League is a series of team flying competitions held at sites throughout Southern California from Santa Barbara to San Diego. The general idea is to encourage SoCal flying clubs to sponsor local flying competitions and award the winning team at the end of the flying season. Individual flying is encouraged, but the main focus is team flying.

Two classes exist in this series (Open and Sport). Open class pilots generally have a lot of XC experience and typically are H4 pilots flying topless gliders (if you’ve ever flown over 50 miles, you belong in this category). Sport class pilots generally have a H3 with a XC sign off or a H4 pilot that is getting his feet wet in the competition scene. Sport class pilots may fly topless gliders, sandbagging is seriously looked down upon and subject to host over-site.

The competition would likely involve several rounds, at least one round at each of the sponsoring sites. The team at the end of the season with the most points wins the SoCal Cup.

Each club that would like to compete would be required to host at least one weekend event for the season, provide local logistical information, site briefings, weather briefings, task selection, and general information for the visiting pilots. The competitions are open to all USHGA registered pilots for hang gliders, paragliders will be considered at a later date if this idea proves beneficial (or if we can get enough interest early on we’ll make sure there’s a class for them as well). Pilots are required to be registered in their respective clubs. Joining the hosting club is greatly encouraged.

My thought was that Santa Barbara, Sylmar, Crestline, Elsinore, and San Diego would put up teams and sponsor a weekend event

Participation or Helping

I'm interested in participating (although I do not have a XC sign-off) or helping in some manner.

First Steps

Post by Chip »

Don,

Our first steps are getting sponsors from each of the flying clubs and points of contact. From there we'll are start laying out the ground-work and how each of the events will be scheduled and run.

If we do this right, it could lead to a regular thing in SoCal (my goal).

If anyone else wants to get in on the ground floor this is a good opportunity to do so. There will be plenty to do.

Looks like it's happening:

and it's this weekend at Marshall/Crestline. :D

So far only 3 HG Pilots have signed up, and none of them are topless (or their gliders either). :?:
