Kagel Mtn in the Really Old Days

The attached photo taken in 1888 looks upstream towards Towers Launch, Locals, and the Kagel ridge line. Long before the flood control projects that brought us the Pacoima Dam and the smaller Lopez Dam (nearly 3 miles down stream), efforts were made to dam up the water table below Pacoima Wash. Very near where the Lopez Debris Basin is now, a 600 ft wide submerged dam was built. Most of the dam was underground extending only about 6 ft. above the surface.
