Engine Failure with Video and Narrative

Hi All: Couldn't decide whether to post in "General" or "Safety" but decided to post here. This is a great little video of a gentleman who suffers a catastrophic engine failure in a Cessna 205 en route at about 9000 feet. At that point he's a glider with a lot of decisions and no...

Re: Website migration

Hi Joe: No, we did not lose the search function. What happened was, due to the excellent efforts of Marshall, the board was migrated from the 20 year obsolete and hacker prone PHPBB2 software base to the current PHPBB3 software. What you are seeing is an old Google search result pointing to the now ...

(Admin hat on) This conversation has gone from a simple congratulations for a qualified and deserving individual to name calling and political rants. Let’s grow up. When I return from Lake Powell, where I have little real internet service, I’m going to split off the political portions into the Polit...

WW Eagle 164 Free or will be Scrapped (TAKEN)

Glider is going to good home :). WW Eagle 164 that I have flown off and on the past two decades. One owner. Never crashed. Pick up at my home or at Sylmar LZ only. I will not ship. Flew it last in the Big Sur trip this Fall. Still flies straight. HOWEVER, battens are corroding with some having holes...

Yes ... airspeed is pretty much key to any takeoff -- applies to powered pilots as well.

I've done a few queries lately trying for hotels and campsites in the path of the eclipse thinking I could fly to a local airport and stay at a local hotel. As of today, every hotel I've checked is sold out on the days of the eclipse so it's pretty much "phone a friend" time. As an example...

Moderation

After discussion with board members and our President I have deleted the entire thread containing a poll regarding a specific person. Although there are "Terms of Service", we are a forum without formal rules. The only rule that might exist is one that says: “If you make us act as if we ...

I'll say this once. Personal attacks are off limits. Let's keep the conversation on topic. I appreciate that some of the parties may not like each other. That's OK. However, if this continues to degenerate into personal attacks and dredging up of ancient history not relevant to the topic I'll need t...

!

I just donated $200. This is important.

Also consider this my intention to be more present in our unpowered flight than I've been lately while doing powered flight!

Dan Burton in 2001 came up with a very playable hang gliding simulator that's still online although I don't recommend playing that way. You can download the code and compile it locally. That's because the javascript is old and insecure. You'd have to set your browser to accept very insecure java (ba...

The conversion is not that difficult. Chip has a working prototype of the forum in the new format. The issue is all the custom software written behind scenes that is in a format not supported by the new forum PHPBB3. All of the custom software needs to be re-written. That is a non-trivial task. Also...

Terry: Contact Chip and Ken Andrews. They can let you know what's involved. Chip has done pretty extensive work determining what the port looks like and has a prototype website that actually works pretty well. It's clearly not time critical as we're years behind the time on this software. So, if you...

Post deleted. IP address banned. User ID gone. That's about all we can do.
If someone wants to volunteer to complete the port to PHBB3 that would be great.

It's a lot of work because we have a lot of background software that won't work in PHBB3 and it will need to be re-written.

Hi Niall: You can usually ferret out a scammer just by asking a couple of direct hang gliding related questions. Very few non-pilots are familiar with the vernacular. You could also ask a nonsense question and see how the seller responds. i.e. What's the condition of the leading edge torsion bar? If...

Mapping the Matterhorn with Drones

This is pretty cool. Drones are used to map the Matterhorn to create a 3D map in 6 hours. http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/aerial-robots/sensefly-and-drone-adventures-toss-uavs-off-the-summit-of-the-matterhorn The engineers also get to climb the Matterhorn. That's probably why it was sele...
