Re: Memorial Day in the Owens anyone?

I hope everyone gets to fly somewhere. I do plan on going to the Owens soon. My wife offered to drive for me in about two weeks, and my kids are willing to come, so no childcare issues. :-)

Re: Memorial Day in the Owens anyone?

I'm thinking this isn't going to happen. I could be wrong, and I'm still holding out a bit of hope, but right now, I don't see how we can do this as a group. Individuals with family drivers, sure. But a group? I don't see how. (And I am unlikely to have such a driver at that time.) But we don'...

Re: Memorial Day in the Owens anyone?

Excellent. We still need to find driver(s), I think. I don't currently have one. I do have a vehicle that can take 3-4 gliders and a similar number of pilots (myself included.) And it can go off road. Tight space for gear, but we can make it work.

Re: Memorial Day in the Owens anyone?

I forgot to mention: Hang III or above. Strong launches. Usually, there is very little wind on launch, and it is almost a cliff. And as Mario says, weather permitting. Usually, the road is open by Memorial Day weekend, but not always. (It wasn't open that early last year, I think.) But 90%+ times it...

Memorial Day in the Owens anyone?

I am seriously considering going to the Owens Valley for Memorial Day weekend. As of now, I have no driver or other pilots, but if anyone wants to come, lets see what we can set up. (Weather and road conditions permitting, of course.) Early in the season the mountains are beautiful with all the snow...

Maybe I missed it, but I see a date for the Christmas party, but no time. When is it?

Yep, Sue kicked some serious booty, flying well in weak conditions. Thanks to all who went, and made the trip better by your presence.

I will miss Katherine greatly. She was a kind and helpful person, and a huge asset to the club. I cherish her memory.

Re: Flyng the Owens in October

I have a reservation at the Dow Villa, for Fri/Sat nights. It has 2 beds, so if anyone wants to share a room, I'm ok with that. Or not. Up to you all. $161.28 total for both nights. So, if we split it, that's $40.32 per night each. ($80.64 for both nights, each). Note: The Dow hotel is a very old bu...

OK, I'm in. How many days? Sat/Sun of course, but are we doing Fri and/or Monday also?
Please keep me in the loop.

I am interested. Earlier is better weather wise (at least statistically).
How do I get confirmed?

Yep. That's right. I couldn't remember the name of the road when I posted, but seeing it reminded me. Mt. Raymond Rd.

Re: Yosemite

I just got back from Yosemite. Bridalveil is open, but no water. The camp host says it might be quite a while. He says that the fire last year "melted the water lines", whatever that means. In any case, no water there or at the bathrooms at Chinquapin (where Glacier Point Road splits from the main r...

Re: Yosemite

But it is actually better.

Aug 1st or later: No change - You can camp at Bridalveil.
Jul 15th-Aug 1st: Now you can camp at Bridalveil, when you couldn't before.
July 15th or earlier: No change - you still have to find somewhere else to camp.

Re: Yosemite

As of today, Tuesday 6/25/19, the Park Service web site for Yosemite has Bridalveil Creek campground opening on July 15th. (A Monday.) Just thought you'd all like to know. That means that the Dave Bakke weekend(7/20 & 21), and my weekend (7/27 & 28) should have the campground open. Assuming they don...

Re: Yosemite

One thing to note that is different this year. There has been a lot of extra snow very late. Then rain. The road to Glacier point road was open, then closed, then open, then closed, then open. The river is higher than normal for this time of year. Bridalveil Creek Campground will likely open later t...
