jesse; Isn't sod ready for use after installation? I was only half kidding about the fencing off. Sod needs to develop roots, otherwise the baby roots will break whenever anyone walks on them. I really recommend NOT to use sod, unless you are willing to amend the soil to a depth of at least 6 inche...

Very good. The 6 foot wide idea was to begin grass as lower cost beginning step. It would also very highly motivate pilots to be accurate on their landings. Everyone would try to land on the grass strip and the narrower it is, the better they would get at it. No, no, no. They can't land ON the gras...

Since the touchdown point is the only part of the runway that really matters, all you really need are the "numbers". Since your are supposed to keep your eyes on the numbers, might help if we actually had some. These numbers could be: "H2-3" for the wash and "H4" for th...

When It Rains, It Pours

What's with all the accidents? What's up with Walter? What’s up with Darryl? Why are the Gods frowning on Sylmar? Maybe it’s good: SHGA is hitting Rock Bottom, and like the alcoholic or drug addict, the club needs this in order to admit it has Big Problems and start to save itself. No one else w...

It sounds like letting the Perfect be the enemy of the Good.

Good for you, Joseph. I support your decision to not waste time enabling the
dysfunction.

We have lost an invaluable resource in your resignation.

Otherwise Andy Jackson may become your "home" site.

So while writing those letters of support for AJ, please consider directing some time and energy to SHGA as well....

They are called "Permit Expediters" and one such company is JPL Zoning in Van Nuys. 818.781.0016 They can often give you a written estimate for the work, so you at least have a ceiling on costs. This has been discussed before in this forum. Problem is no one "owns" the project so...

I am wondering too, why this is an issue all of a sudden. Gliders have been flying in these mountains for 30 years. Is it possible to have some kind of broadcasting "beacon" at Kagel? Like a transponder but fixed, with a fixed "looped" broadcast about HG activity? I have heard th...

But doesn't it bother anyone that...their friends' health and safety is more precarious on the ground than in the air? No. More bothersome is that their boorishness threatens a flying site that has been here for many years, and threatens the recreation of better-mannered members. Just ban alcohol a...

Graphic Wind Representation

Because I am such an analog person, I found this to be a pretty cool solution to showing wind velocity and direction. Very intuitive: http://www.crestlinesoaring.org/wx/index.php Go to the "arrows" button at the top of the frame. How neat-o is that? Who knows how to set this up? Would be r...
