"Cloudsuck" by Davis Straub--Book Review

Davis Straub, honcho of the Oz Report (www.ozreport.com), the controversial international HG blog, has recounted his quest for cross-country records in a full-length ebook available on his Site. Straub was a wannabe who had never flown more than 10 miles when he hooked up with the pioneers of xcount...

Ave. S Jan. 21--A Visitor's View

Saturday was a pretty day at Ave. S, 15 pilots and a fair breeze and the desert spread out like a welcome mat. I rode over with Dustin, a young comp pilot and Wills Wing demo-driver who was flying our area for the first time. He had flown the comps in Brazil, and just come back from Ecuador, cruisin...

Ham Radio License in One Day

Windsports is running its one-day Ham license course April 29. Two years ago I decided to study on my own, bought a workbook, and proceeded to have a most unpleasant couple of weeks struggling through a total anarchy of useless information which was at the same time boring, irrelevant and impossible...

That's a good point. Mybe it's worth mentioning the emphasis, in airplane flying, on "clearing your turns." Over ten years I had about 150 hours of dual instruction in single-engine planes, and anybody with an instrument rating has had this drilled into his head. One CFI used to punch me i...

Mid-air at Torrey Jan. 15 '06

From Tad Hurst on the Crestline Forum: There was a mid-air collision yesterday, and it was serious but without injury. In all of the traffic, two hang gliders collided while approaching each other. One pilot tried to turn, and the top of his glider contacted the corner of the control frame of the ot...

The PVC mast and streamers on launch have turned out to be better than than nothing. But you can't see it from the LZ with cheap binoculars, and it's sometimes hard to read even on the Windsports Kagel Kam. Next evolution: A small windsock on a mast of ABS. (ABS is black, dents rather than shatters,...

Elsinore LZ Fence Down

There's a report to that effect on the Crestline board. It is implied that the landowner responded to some liability issue. Gliders again can choose to land in big downhill field.

Eyewitness confirmation?

Kagel 1/3/2006

First flight of the new year. Bright crisp day but Greblo advised the noon truck that the ground was wet, so low thermals would be weak but likely stronger higher up. On launch there were small clouds overhead and over Locals. They grew and dispersed rapidly. Wind was S 5-8 and temps in mid 60s. Ver...

On Dec. 22 a streamer was installed as a windsock substitute. It is two 10' lengths of PVC (1.5" and 2" dia), telescoped to 15' long and screwed together. Three lengths of 4" wide heavy Dacron streamers, the longest óf them 4', were bound at one end and duct-taped to the top. The pol...

As of the week before Christmas, the windsock is reported missing again. By my count that;'s the third one since summer. This latest windsock was tattered to half-size, and was old to begin with, so I am now personally convinced (finally) that it isnt a fraternity prank, or random drunks, but that S...

Protest Filed Today, !2/6/05

I have today formally complained to the National Weather Service about the continued contrary winds in the Los Angeles area, with specific reference to the unsuitability of the current pattern for hang gliding. I have pointed out that there has long been a tacit agreement that the winds would blow f...

Temporary Flight Restrictions

Here's a new site for TFRs. Apparently they've all been combined on a single map. Click on the depiction for more information.

Might be a help when wondering about Presidential visits or fire restrictions .

I'm in for $100 for the whack cam. I'll match another $100 for the trees or any other landscaping ideas (big deal, that amounts to four tanks of gas). Our site is a great resource. What's the master plan for upgrading it?
