House near the LZ for sale

Some folks know Pattie Knapp, the goat and chicken lady, who lives a few houses north of the LZ. She and her husband, Scott, are retiring to Bishop and their house is for sale. The address is 12476 Tibbetts Street, which is the second house south of the Gavina Street bridge. It has a large back lot ...

Falcon League on December 1

We got skunked by rain last time around, so we'll try again this coming Saturday, December 1. The rain might win again, but let's hope for the best. My suggestion is that we meet at 11:00, load gliders, and go walk the bail-out LZ at the intersection of Almetz St. and Leedy Ave. If we like the way i...

No, I meant that OP would probably have more creative ideas than me for a rallying cry for Lynn's campaign. It seemed like just his sort of thing. Sorry I wasn't clear. Then again, if Orian wanted to launch his own write-in campaign, I wouldn't stand in his way...

Candidate withdrawal during an election

You didn't necessarily waste your vote. If you can convince Lynden to un-withdraw, then your vote will matter again! I tried to convince him myself, but without success. Perhaps off topic, it's difficult to know how to handle an election where a candidate withdraws (or dies, or becomes incapacitated...

Activities director: write in Lynn to win!

As noted on the homepage, Lynden Vazquez is withdrawing his name from the ballot as Activities Director. This means next year's winner will be decided by write-in votes. I'm here campaigning for Lynn McLaughlin. She has agreed to serve again in 2013, and as everyone knows, she's done a fantastic job...

2013 candidates for DAL

Ballots for the 2013 Board of Directors went in the mail today (thanks, Katherine!), so current members should be receiving them shortly. To preserve the suspense, I won't reveal the candidates for most of the offices, but it's a great slate of familiar names. As in recent years, the only contested ...

Falcon League on November 17

Saturday's a Falcon League day, though the forecast is looking mighty dismal. Even if it's a sled-run day, there's some interesting Falcon flying to be done, so long as it isn't actually raining. Mike Lichtreman and I had a protracted discussion recently about what glide ratio a Falcon would get at ...

Nominations are open

The SHGA's board of directors is chosen democratically, and nominations are currently open for the 2013 board. Board members aren't special; they are simply club members who care enough back up their talk with work. Some conflict of interest is pretty much inevitable in a small club, especially when...

The Falcon League is back

A couple years ago, the Falcon League became a somewhat regular thing on alternate Saturdays, and I think it's high time to bring it back to life. In case the Falcon League doesn't sound familiar, the idea is to put experienced pilots on introductory gliders, and find some challenging cross-country ...

OTOH - the club may benefit from maintaining a web page dedicated to obtaining a tech license. Current links to the relevant sources for study guides, practice tests and exam locations and little else is required other than the incentive of each pilot to get licensed. In the blue menu bar on the le...

Lost cell phone

My cell phone has gone missing. It's an absolutely basic phone, small clamshell design, black on one side and silver on the other, with an AT&T logo on it. My best guess is that it fell out of a harness pocket while I was trying to repair a zipper at one of the pavilion picnic tables last Sunday...

zip-lock bag with black fabric

Found in the LZ on Labor Day Monday, September 3: a zip-lock bag containing about a square yard of black fabric. Huh? Maybe it would protect a carbon base-tube from the dirt while setting up. In any case, it's in the old phone box next to the Coke machine.

Thanks to all who helped, and all who participated!

Particular thanks go to Andy Beem, Fast Eddy, and Joe Greblo for supporting this event. I think that just about everyone who participated got something out of it. Some found worn lines due for replacement; others found ways to make their harnesses more comfortable or work a little better; and a few ...

Harness Appreciation Day on Saturday July 14

After flying on Saturday afternoon, July 14, we'll be celebrating all things harness-related. This will be a collaborative event to share what you know, and to to learn new things, about harnesses. It will be an opportunity to look over your harness with another pilot and check for safety issues. Th...

Current toilet costs

Don,
Our current annual cost for the toilets (one in winter, two approximately from the Spring Air Festival through the Dahlsten Cup) runs about $2100, plus or minus about $100. Exact amounts are in the annual financial reports available in the Members area.

Ham radio headset wiring for about $15

Every now and again, someone asks about my ham radio headset wiring. People report that the audio quality is good, it seems to be as reliable as anything else, and it's cheap! It works with a Yaesu VX-150 radio, and I presume any similar radio. Here's the circuit diagram, and it can be soldered toge...
