2012 JPL Open House

Every year, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory welcomes the public to its annual open house. This year, the event is June 9-10, 9 AM until 4 PM both days. JPL always puts on a great show for everyone interested in space and science, adults and kids alike. The place works like a theme park, so bring ...

KAGEL ROAD!!

Rome Dodson says: Shame, shame on SHGA! Do you know only the Sheriff, USFS and SHGA have access to the road? Do you know how we get that privilege? Well, we earned it by being good stewards to the forest. For 20 years we've collected couches, mattresses and other debris and hauled it down to dumpste...

Gold Canyon

Some pilots, particularly those on topless gliders, will know the spectacular white cliffs behind Big T, maybe a third of the way from there to Mount McKinley. Of course I'm too terrified to appreciate the scenery when flying over this tiger country, so I went exploring on foot a few days ago. Frida...

Garlock

Count me in for the weekend! I'm pretty flexible on just about everything, and generally have a spare vario and a spare GPS if necessary. Like usual, I've got a good hang-mobile with space for people and camping gear and gliders, but don't have a solution to the perpetual driver question. As I dig t...

Wheels are good!

May I humbly suggest flying with wheels? They often provide good solutions to bad situations. Wheels are also cheaper than downtubes.

Roof model

As I posted earlier in this thread, three roof designs are under consideration: skylights as shown in our approved plans, cupolas to preserve the architectural concept without the cost of skylights, or basic hip roofs for simplicity. My web surfing indicates that the architectural pyramid skylights ...

For those who are interested, a scanned copy of the pavilion landscaping is here , photocopied from the plans. I enlarged it slightly so that the scale is exactly 1/8 inch to the foot, and have drawn on a grid of six-foot squares. The squares are aligned with the centers of the pavilion posts, as th...

Pavilion projects

I agree with Rob that there are three primary projects we need to do: the railing and stair hand rails, the roof, and the handicap access ramp and landscaping. Thanks to Glenn, the railing is well under way. Board members are working on the other items as time permits, especially on the roof. Follow...

Off topic - How'd you and your Litespeed fare following a near appearance here? It was late in the day, and the air was still active as I turned onto final and confidently planned to win the spot landing contest. First I was going to be short, and then long, and then short again as I leveled out in...

Some questions about the pavilion project

There was a discussion about the pavilion project here, started by Tom Shaffer on September 11, 2011. It seems to have vanished from the list of topics, but remarkably, it's not really gone. It survives at: http://www.shga.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2714 I wish I understood what happened to it...

Brief history of the CUP story

Our contract with Nootenboom Construction Company doesn't lend itself to simple percentage calculations, for it involved several modifications, amendments, and renegotiations along the way. We can study the details off-line if you wish. But rather than rehashing this stuff, I think our time would be...

Thanks for your questions and interest, and I apologize for the slow reply; I've been out of town the last couple days without Internet access. What was the original proposed cost for the pavilion construction? In June of 2007, ballots were mailed to all SHGA members, and they were asked to vote for...

A couple updates on Sakaida mining

A couple updates... - Thank you to the 14 people who have sent me email messages so far. This forum has a lot more readers than that though, so please respond to me (or Joe Greblo or the CASM-SFV folks) if you don't want to fly in diesel fumes for the next seven years. - If one email address or anot...

If you agree, please click here to send me an email message. From your responses, I'll collect a list of names and addresses to show opp...

Dues restructuring

At the January meeting, the board voted to eliminate the $100 initiation fee for new members, refund the initiation fees paid by current members at $20/year for the next five years, and increase annual dues to $75/year. The net impact will be a $5/year savings for current members, and will make it e...
