SHGA's youngest hang glider pilot in training
Emily Rio Margolin was born yesterday at 7 lbs and 2 oz. She is amazing. She is doing well as well as her wonderful mom who is recovering from the surgery. Thanks for all the support and love. We are very very happy! The flying lessons are on hold at least until she get the eating/pooping/sleeping t...

Flytec 5030 Displaying GPS Altitude
The altitude display on my vario seems to be the GPS altitude (inaccurate) instead of the barometric altitude (more accurate). I was able to prove this on my last flight: after topping out a thermal I looked at my vario and announced on the radio an altitude of 6350' and remembered seeing as much as...

(one - size - better) yep. I think a bigger launch ramp (traverses more elevation) is better. I'm sure I won't get any disagreement on that. The new ramp is bigger. But the top height, steepness and shape are very important too. (two - top height - neutral) I agree that the elevated top height force...

and also in every day low tech occurrence - visit Supine Jim at Lake El Mirage and he will take you on his land yacht (small sail boat on a carts with wheels instead of a hull). he routinely hits speeds much faster than the wind (like double). ok now with this design, this is not done directly downw...

seems the lift that day was also imaginary. it was the second shortest flight i have had there in years, including all my tandem training flights, very late in the day flights, etc. the absolute shortest one i had in the area was from towers in 2011, 10 min, i remember watching one by one everybody ...

arggg. Posts of forecasts with light winds and climbs to 19k'! And I just took my temperature of 101 degrees. Feeling really sick. I don't think I can be ready to go on a trip in a couple of days. I signed up for one of Larry Dow Villa reservations. Larry doesn't need it. Unless someone gives me a c...

@Rob, yep, my suspicion was that was the case:) I understand the theory and have no doubt that flying McCready speeds is the best way to win a comp. The downsides to it are the normal Sylmar puckers: flying faster in turbulent air and potentially getting to waypoints with poorer landing options at a...

> The thing is trimmed in a stall When I first flew my new T2 and slowly let the bar out in smooth air and it stalled and dropped out of the sky it was a WTF for me too. So I spoke with the factory. This is deliberate. The explanation I received is that they are optimized for two modes of flight, th...

the forum board link don't work with Firefox anymore
to reproduce, click on any of the forum boards (like Flight Discussion) with Firefox, version 20. I tried this for a Windows and Linux PC. Oddly enough, the forum boards do still work with IE. I think the reason is that Firefox is expecting the character encoding of the HTML to be specified. IE seem...

Sylmar on Friday (5/3) with Approaching Smoke from the West
a bumpy day but some good lift to 7700'. It was fun to dig out at Big T then watch the smoke approach.
