Re: Yosemite

As of today, Tuesday 6/25/19, the Park Service web site for Yosemite has Bridalveil Creek campground opening on July 15th. (A Monday.) Just thought you'd all like to know. That means that the Dave Bakke weekend(7/20 & 21), and my weekend (7/27 & 28) should have the campground open. Assuming ...

Re: Yosemite

One thing to note that is different this year. There has been a lot of extra snow very late. Then rain. The road to Glacier point road was open, then closed, then open, then closed, then open. The river is higher than normal for this time of year. Bridalveil Creek Campground will likely open later t...

I added to the post after you posted. You were fast! ;-) RE: bubble levels. I am told that they react too quickly, and jump all over the place. Maybe one could be built with very thick fluid, but a normal one is unlikely to help much. It really is very difficult to stay even close to level. Much mor...

A couple of things: Cloud base often drops. I've seen it drop hundreds of feet at Kagel. I once launched with cloud base (very light suck) 50 feet over launch. 20 minutes later, it was 100 feet over Trash. Still very light suck. If the suck had been stronger.... Also, it is incredibly easy to lose y...

I'm glad you both are ok. RE: green vs brown. When given a choice, I prefer greenish brown. Usually, that's what pasture looks like. Pasture won't have pipes and equipment as the owners are protecting their cash cows. Greener means less turbulence/lift. Browner means less chance of swam, high crops,...

After having a fun flight from Garlock to Trona Airport last Monday, I went home and broke my toe in my own house on Tuesday in a Tragic Pantry Accident. (Pantry, not panty...)

Crap.

So, I cannot go flying in the Owens. Anyone hoping to go with my, my apologies.

Owens Valley Sept. 21-23? Pilots, Driver, Vehicle wanted!

Hi all, Since I am unable to go to the Labor Day Owens trip, I'm hoping to go September 21-23. Steve M. had planned on running a trip then, but he has to be out of town. I have no driver (yet) and only a 2-glider car, but am willing to pay a driver, and be a guide for those who are less than familia...

Weekend of September 21st in the Owens?

Hi all, Since I am unable to go to the Labor Day Owens trip, I'm hoping to go September 21st. Steve had planned on running it, but he has to be out of town. I have no driver and only a 2-glider car, but am willing to pay a driver, and be a guide for those who are less than familiar with the Owens Va...

There have been big storms in the later part of the day. Nicer earlier, though. Keep an eye out. (Drove through a few days ago. A friend was there yesterday.)

For those who cannot make the scheduled weekends, July 21/22 will are also available. I'll be the Site Monitor that weekend. There is a chance I could launch people that Friday(20th) and Monday(23rd) as well. You'd need to coordinate with me in advance if you want to do that. 661-965-0493. I won't b...

Creek Fire, Kagel evacuation, and an invitation

The Creek Fire is currently causing mandadory evacuation of the LZ area (Little T Road to Sayre, N of the 210), and voluntary evacuation of surrounding areas (to 5/14 Jct). J and I offer our home to any Sylmartians who are affected. Also, I can help take gliders out if that's necessary. George Stebb...

Fox Field open house & aircraft display (Antelope Valley)

SFTE/AIAA members: We are having an Open House, Pancake Breakfast, and Aircraft Static Display at the William J Fox Airport (KWJF) in Lancaster this Saturday, Sept 10. The Pancake Breakfast is from 8-10, and the Open House/Display from 8 to 2. This is a low-key Open House (as opposed to the big airs...

Bear Mountain is inside a locked gate of a private development. You have to either live there, or have permission from someone who does. There is a (very small) local group who fly there. Also, the LZ in front is not the best. It is better to get up and go over the back. BTW, over the back is also i...

George's incident had nothing to do with the caribiner. The slider rod on the back plate of his harness was torn out during an accidental 6G pull-up. The story is on the forum somewhere and here: http://ozreport.com/pub/rotorfailure.shtml Adam Parer: http://adam-parer.blogspot.com/2009/11/cheating-...

There can be issues with two biners. They can get in each other's way, and impede unhooking when you need it. (Water, wind, etc..) What I was talking about was making sure that if the biner failed my harness (and I) were still attached to the chute. I have the D-Ring going down (not up) and held tha...
