Glenn; I'm glad you're making everyone think here. And I agree with your final conclusions. I'm not sure that my thoughts are what most pilots want to hear, but I found it extremely helpful when I owned up to the fact that weight shift hang gliders are only slightly less limited flying machines than...

I think there's a misunderstanding here in what I believe. Tumbles tend to be more prominent in situations surrounding high angles of attack, not low angles of attack. There are 5 or 6 reasons why I believe extremely high speed approaches have increased dangers (as a general rule) and should be avoi...

Tragedy in the L/Z

Jeff Craig was killed today when he crashed on approach to landing near the l/z. The accident occurred at around 3:20 pm during a low approach into the wash l/z. He struck a boulder in the riverbed and sustained serious injuries. Club members arrived on scene quickly and Alex Wright and Foster Winte...

SEND A LETTER NOW

A great piece on KTLA, channel 5 last night. The CSS is doing a masterful job of getting the message out, but these letters are critical. Please everyone take the time to send one. An assault on one flying site should be viewed as an assault on all sites. If we don't come strongly to their aid when ...

We are lucky Chris, and it's a little too easy to take it for granted. Thanks for reminding us.
We hope all is going well with you and that you'll come back soon to fly with us.

Good news, bad news! Price is now $550. from Zaon, but it's improved and now comes with a cable that will pipe it's audio signal into a headset (that's very good!). Aircraft Spruce and Supply sells it for $535. plus tax and shipping. Windsports is making them available for $500. +tx. and W/S pays sh...

That's a great time to go up. If you let me know in advance, I think I can get another pilot or two to go up with you.

In the past 5 years we have relied on 5 different elements to help keep us safe from mid airs. 1. A symbol on the sectional and area charts. 2. Daily transcribed broadcasting on the Burbank ATIS (Automated Terminal Information Service). 3. Radio advisories from So-Cal Approach Control. 4. Our own pi...

Good news Jim.
Thanks for letting me know.
I drove up there Friday evening in the hopes of catching some of the rowdies trying to get in. We saw no one.

I'll be curious to see whether or not this lock is an improvement.

New Gate Lock is Tricky

There's a brand new lock on the gate to launch and don't expect to figure out how to open it once you get there. It's way too different from normal padlocks, and too hard to see inside the pipe to figure it out. For this reason, we've posted instructions and photos on the club website in the "M...

Help needed with accident report

I'm tasked with submitting the accident report to the USHPA and USHGA on Richard's accident and I'd like to speak with each of the pilots that flew that day. I'd like to learn more about the flying conditions those pilots encountered. I'd appreciate an email or a phone call from anyone that flew or ...

Big Sur on the 4th for Hang 2's

I'm running a hang 2 lesson trip up to Big Sur's Plaskett Creek flying site on the weekend of the 4th of July. Students can call or email me for information. Any intermediate or advanced rated pilots that aren't going to the club's Hurricane trip, are welcome to come up and fly with us. If you've ne...

Jesse;
The spot is just west of Kagel at the end of the range before it drops down to the Santa Susana Pass in Simi. It's Conservancy land and accessed through a locked gate by permit. Otherwise, you'd find me flying there often.

Will The Gate Vandals Win?

Friday, May 30th. the gate lock was busted off and we were quick to notify the Forest Service and the Sheriffs. On the following Monday, Fred Ballard, Erwin, and others arrived at the gate and found it busted wide open again. Fred replaced the entire lock mechanism with a spare, locked the gate behi...

Can't wait to have you guys. Please remember that this site requires a hang 3. Perhaps there's a way for one of our local instructor's to get the higher hour hang 2's in the air here on the cheap.

Barton,
Thanks for the info. Lisa will log enter this on the log as we're collecting data for the Forest Service, partly to demonstrate our contribution to an eventual gate solution.

Did you happen to get the description of the trucks and license number?
If so, how about emailing them to Lisa.

Thanks for the tip Craig. For those of you who don't know Craig, he was not only a hang 4 pilot and founding member of our club for many, many years, he was also one of the hardest working contributors. Among other things, Craig very actively helped the club with community service. He volunteered wi...
