Google Earth, CompeGPS, and Garmin MapSource Waypoints

Post by Chip »

8) I've loaded up waypoints for pilots to download (right click Save As)

Google Earth format (kml) (you may need to tell your browser to save as a kml file instead of a xml file.
Sylmar
Ojai
Santa Barbara

CompeGPS format (wpt)
Sylmar
Ojai
Santa Barbara

If you have any waypoints that you want to share please email ([email protected]) them to me and I will convert them to the proper format. All of these waypoints have elevation data. :o

New Sylmar Waypoints

Post by Chip »

I've updated the Sylmar waypoints for the upcoming Dahlsten Cup. Here's the current list. We're using the short name so flight computers may better determin final glide calculations.

For those of you computer savy folks the download list above this post has been updated as well.

Chip, I tried to get the CompGps format and the link led me to a page not found error.

Fixed it .........

It was spelled wrong on the server (actually it was a case sensitivity problem)

Mapsource waypoints

Post by Mike M »

Chip, since it appears the Dahlsten cup may actually occur this weekend, will you be posting Mapsource (i.e. Garmin) format waypoints for the competition. I don't see any links to that format on your posts.

Mike,
You can convert waypoints to any format you need using GpsBabel (it's free):

Thanks! That works.

Now we just need weather to cooperate so we can actually have a competition.

Upload/download util

Post by dteal »

Jeff,
Is there a free-ware utility to upload/download waypoints that you would suggest? I'd like to save what I have, then download all the Sylmar waypoints. I have a Garmin GPSmap 76cs.
Thanks,
DT

Waypoints fixed

Post by Chip »

Two tools I use to convert waypoints that have given me the best results.

GPS Dump. I use this mainly to convert GOOD waypoints to the format I need. If the waypoints are in one of the following formats:
  • Ozi/GPSDump files (*.wpt)
    MapSource files (*.mps)
    SeeYou files (*.cup)
    GPS exchange files (*.gpx)
    GoogleEarth files (*.kml)
    WinPilot files (*.dat)
GPS Dump works on PC's and Mac (mac download here). Once you have a GOOD waypoint file, then GPS Dump can convert to the formats listed above.

If you are using flychart software to upload your waypoints choose to save your waypoints as CompeGPS format. Flychart can import these directly as well as SeeYou and GPS exchange formats.

Finally if I have GOOD waypoints and need something very odd, I'll attempt to convert the waypoints on-line using an on-line converter at GPSVisualizer

I cannot access this page for waypoints anymore. Are they available somewhere?

None of these GPS links seem to work anymore. Alack and alas, I sent my 6030 in for maintenance, and as part of that procedure, they had to wipe the instrument's memory of way points and flight log. My beloved way points are no more. :(

I would greatly appreciate it if someone has the time and know how to re-post our Kagel way points to this thread, or kindly re-direct me to another resource. Arigato!
