What am I `missing here? Claims to have reached a speed of 364 mph. and hopes to exceed the sound barrier ? Doesn,t terminal velosity for a human body still exist?? approx 12o mph . I didn,t see a rocket strapped on his back .

Terminal velocity, being a function of drag, increases in thinner air. If he was high enough he could break the sound barrier before falling into the denser air which would slow him down. Awesome at any speed. Just think about how wild it is for a terrestrial mammal to figure out a way to get into space just so he can fall faster, yet we can't figure out how to spend less than we make. Maybe these are related obsessions.

Joeseph Kittinger reached 614 mph in 1960

The speed of sound at sea level in dry air is 768mph.

Kittenger had a hole in his glove and his hand swelled up to twice its normal size. His first attempt he lost consciousness while spinning 120rpm pulling 22 g's at his extremities. The auto chute kicked in.
