Janyce and I were talking about wire slaps and I thought I had some video of them. I found one in this clip:

Good thing we fly strong gliders with designs that pass the Hang Gliders Manufacturing Association (HGMA).

What causes this to happen? I'm unfamiliar with wire slaps.

i'm sure you will get an answer to this (if not many of them) but to help frame the answer, who is asking the question? are you a sylmar pilot? do you fly hang gliders? I don't see a way to connect a forum username to a real person name.

Turbulence is the usual cause of wire slaps. The glider gets jostled vertically and the cables go loose then get twanged. In bad turbulence, your harness bridle will go slack and you whole body will get jolted. At high speeds it can be considerably worse...

ooo, yucky. I've kicked the keel/sail a few times in AZ but never lost total control of the control frame. That is the stuff that tumbles are made from...

Yea, I'm a Sylmar pilot... H2 so I'm not surprised you don't know who I am, I haven't been there long!

I don't think there's any place to put your name on the profiles.

Marshall,
Send me a photo and a brief bio or whatever you'd wish posted with your pic and I'll put it on the Member Photos page so we can all know who to avoid as another unknown H2. Afterall, everyone knows H4s are allergic.

A weightless wire snapper is not that uncommon.

I've had this Markus style event happen several times.

http://vimeo.com/11393655

Once was obvious. I saw a solid column of gliders, swifts, hawks and even ground trash like wrappers in a visible (near dust devil) of a thermal around stupids. I tried to enter tangentially to make the best of the lift. However, My inner wing was lifted beyond 90 and my falcon was completely tipped over.

It was a wire snapper and a pants pooper.
