Kagel to Lukens and back today

Post by JD »

In case anyone was wondering how I made it to Lukens and back today, it was by pushing it very hard. Here's how it went:
12:55 launched Kagel and climbed to 3,650' then everyone began sinking everywhere.
13:10 arrived at Locals at 2,750' and things got better.
13:17 left Towers at 4,300'. Decide to ignore race pilots to the West and head for Lukens while there was time.
13:24 left Lances at 3,750' in buoyant air for Little T and a 12 MPH tail wind.
13:30 arrived Little T at 2,625' and sank to 2,590' while scratching. I was willing and ready to land on the plateau if necessary. I slowly scratched my way East along the spines gaining a few dozen feet at a time in a 10 mph tail wind.
13:40 arrived in front of Big T spine at 2,825' and caught a good but very tight core. Had to bank 60 degrees to stay in it.
13:50 hit 4,010' over Big T and headed for Little Lukens with 5 mph tail wind.
13:55 arrived Lil Lukens at 3,025' and scratched my way down and down.
14:02 bottomed out at 2,420' between Lil Lukens and the wash. Spotted a hawk going up 200' above me in the next bowl.
14:05 topped out at 2,700' in the hawk's thermal and head back around the front.
14:06 caught a bubble breaking off from 2,640'
14:18 topped out at 5,400' and noted the wind was now zero.
14:23 tagged the towers at 5,200' and enjoyed the spectacular view and waved at the hikers then headed West.
14:28 down to 4,200' before reaching Lil Lukens and found a new thermal.
14:35 topped out at 5,000' and headed back for Big T
14:40 3,750' in front of Big T but 5 mph tail wind. Porpoise flew West along the switchbacks and watched Vrezh pass me the opposite direction.
14:48 arrived Lances at 3,100' and played it cautious until I got to Trash
14:54 2,810' at Trash and caught a new cycle.
15:00 3,400' above Trash and decided to save my energy for later in the week.
15:07 uneventful (boring) landing.
