Looking for PTT switch, mic and earphone

Post by msoultan »

Hey Everyone,
I have this radio:

http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/ht/th78a.html

And I would like to find a suitable PTT switch and mic/earphone setup for flying. I've noticed that there are throat mics, and I was curious if that was a good option. I'd appreciate any recommendations or links to websites with more info.

Thanks!
Mike

Remember that I am not a HAM expert at all.

I figure that there are two routes to take:
1. The low end basic minimally acceptable quality PPT system with a kenwood adapter. Windsports sell them, and will install it in your helmet for 60$ or something like that. Mine worked great, but the abuse of about one years worth of flight wore it out.

2. High end super beefy glider-com PPT. I now have one and like it. Big connectors which look like they will stand up much longer. However it was like 120$, more than the actual radio! Hopefully it pays off by lasting a few years.

I ended up getting this:

http://www.bikerhiway.com/motocomm-plug ... -1437.html

The price seemed descent and hopefully it will last for a good while. The connections aren't great and the construction isn't the beefiest in the world, but I'm going to reinforce and shrink-wrap as many connections as I can (except the ones that need to be disconnected) and hopefully that'll keep it lasting for a while.

Thanks for all of your help!

Yeah.. I saw that - pretty trick, but not cheap. Plus, like you said, you've gotta keep everything charged up. But it's nice not having wires all over the place!

Hey Barton,

Are you using the small in ear piece or did you hack it to be able to use a larger speaker in the helmet. Just curious because I had seen these a while back, but ended up just makng my own wired set since I thought the cell phone style earpiece would be akward in your ear in a helmet.

I see they have a larger over the head version with big speaker nad mic and maybe that could be dissasembled and installed in the helmet to avoid putting anything in your ear...

Hey Barton,

For the PTT, why not see if you can mount the battery and circuit board on a watchband or neoprene wristband with a pocket for the board and then run an 8" wire to your finger with a new button.
