Ham Radio License in One Day

Post by Christian »

Windsports is running its one-day Ham license course April 29.

Two years ago I decided to study on my own, bought a workbook, and proceeded to have a most unpleasant couple of weeks struggling through a total anarchy of useless information which was at the same time boring, irrelevant and impossible to remember. I have always wanted to understand how a radio works, theoretically and practically, ajd for example what the F a capacitor is, what tubes do, how transistors work, and why the dipole antenna on my stereo doesn;t. I learned none of that, and I know less about radios now than before, in the way that when you vomit, you lose the benefits of lunch. To take the test, I then drove to a meting of a (very) disorganized Ham in LA on a sunny Saturday, waited in line, endured strange persons' attempts to recruit me for ham organizations featuring earthquake preparedness and odd hats, and almost failed the test for which the book had prepared me stinkin' lousy (after repeatedly scoring 100 percent on Internet ham-quiz practice tests).

You could do it my way, or you could take a one-day course.
