Memorial Day - Blackhawk

Post by Don »

Went to Blackhawk on Monday. While eating breakfast in Hesperia the winds seemed strong and West. Arriving at launch the winds were light and blowing straight in.

Joe Greblo launch first and worked hard to find lift. Rich Gribsby launch next and found the same conditions. Getting low out towards the L/Z they finally found the strong lift but it was tight. Rich's bank angle looked to be 70 degrees but was rewarded with 1,000' up.

Joe and Rich went East / South East about 10+ miles while Ken Andrews ended up 20+.

Kris and Freddy did not launch due to the strong winds aloft and the limited penetration of their Falcons.

The remaining four (President Joseph, Richard "Wind Sock" Shaw, Jeff Craig, and myself) ended up in the infamous L/Z experiencing significant rotor/sink but no broken glider or body parts.

Yeah I hate that LZ. Flying here was pretty normal. Flights later in the day seemed much easier. Fred Ballard had four tandems and was landing with the last one around 6pm
