SHGA Adventure Pass
The SHGA Adventure Pass is similar to a USHPA special skill, and covers knowledge specific to the Sylmar flying site. It is intended for pilots with a desire to explore the territory more than a dependable glide away from the Sylmar LZ. Key requirements for the Adventure Pass include:
Review the SHGA Site Rules and Dangerous Site Conditions,
Walk at least four emergency landing areas near Sylmar,
Land out safely at an alternate LZ, either in Sylmar or at another flying site,
Visit the Angeles Shooting Ranges, and
Discuss flight challenges particular to the Sylmar site with an instructor or observer.
For more information, contact an SHGA instructor or observer. The Adventure Pass is a new experiment, and comments or suggestions are welcome. Please direct your ideas to Ken Andrews.
USHPA Ratings Information
The United States Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association (USHPA) has developed a Pilot Proficiency Program in order to rate pilots based upon completion of WITNESSED tasks. For each rating, there is also a written examination. Below are study guides to assist pilots with those exams.
It is recommended that all pilots maintain a flight log.
The USHPA also has a Pilot Handbook that has the history of the USHPA and lots of other information explaining the structure of the organization and benefits of membership.
These ratings are earned via lessons from USHPA certified instructors. Those authorized to teach at the Sylmar Flight Park are listed above.
This rating signifies that the pilot has developed the skills and judgement to fly at a wide variety of sites, and to make his own safe and responsible decisions.
Instructors and observers at Sylmar expect somewhat more than the USHPA minimum requirements due to the above-average challenges of flying in Southern California. At Sylmar, key requirements for the rating include:
Has held a Novice rating for at least four months,
Has logged a minimum of 30 flying days,
Has logged a minimum of 90 flights, at least 40 with more than 200 feet of ground clearance,
Has logged a minimum of twenty hours of solo airtime,
Has demonstrated three consecutive landings,
Has demonstrated three consecutive launches,
Has passed the USHPA Intermediate written exam, and
Has demonstrated judgement and maturity commensurate with the rating.
The complete checklist and further information are available from SHGA instructors and observers.
