Approaching Burbank over Kagel you were high to clear the mountains, now you gotta get down to the runway at 800 MSL. The typical ATC instruction is "maintain 3,000 until Four Stacks" or maybe "maintain 3000 till on final," if I recall right. To a power pilot, they're ordering yo...

Congrats to the Forum at 200

200 members! When Chris Smith upgraded this forum three years ago, it had only a handful, and its usefulness was unknown (The prior SHGA forum was clunky and full of goofball posts, nobody really seemed to care). Now there are a number of interesting articles, a running history of SHGA issues from g...

I was occasionally in that office during my time in Washington. Brown was, as you suggest, a raaather sophisticated fellow, although painfully thin, who knew scads about model sailboat racing, and was therefore always up for a discussion of the coefficient of lift.

Personally, I'd remove the nudes on the grounds that: 1. Vrezh is apparently [excessively young], something I had not realized previously . 2. I would like to be associated with a forum that generally disapproves of posting porn, thereby distinguishing myself from run of the mill [USC fans]. 3. If t...

But Larry, aren't you afraid that without emoticons nobody will heart you anymore? I feel (very strongly, but in a masculine way) that we need an emocon . That is because sometimes when I am feeling like totally emo, maybe another hang glidr is feeling emo too, huh? Then we would have a way to commu...

Somebody could get a head start on a photographic member roster just by selecting group shots in the galleries on the forum and putting names to faces in a caption. Several work-group gang shots show many members, and there are group shots from flying trips. For example: http://www.shga.com/gallery/...

Who's the safety officer this year? Still Greblo, isn't it? He writes the accident report, as he has for many others, when the accident pilot prefers not to, speaks another language, or is in a full body cast. No names necessary. All pilots, and especially new pilots, should review accident reports ...

------------ Some random thoughts about harnesses: A cocoon needs some instruction too (especially how to put the first foot into the boot: with your knee twisted outward!). Legloops with one central front buckle are luxuary. Easy to put on and you really can't forget 'm. When I am soaring the Dutch...

Even this adjustment varies with shoes. I could not fly my harness barefoot, it is adjusted for boots with thick soles. A great part of comfort factor is getting the pressure on your shoulders just right when you straighten your body inside the harness. Also, these harnesses shrink over the years, s...

Just don't try it during landing approach the 1st time. As with all such changes, practice it high and away from everything. And be carefull when you transition your second hand from the basetube. If you do it while pulled in, you'll "balloon" up, and possibly start a turn. Do it near trim...

Yeah, your shoelaces, shorts, loose baggy pants etc can get caught in the zipper. Think about what you wear. Tight is good as far as clothes. And the tighter the harness, the more that is true. Some guys fold their socks down over their shoelaces before flying. Some buy "wrestling shoes". ...

See: http://www.shga.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=275 ---------------- Pod harnesses, if you haven't had a pod before, take a little getting used to. I was told it actually takes 10 hours to be fully comfortable in one, and t...

Saturn 167, WWZ5, Flytec 4010 vario--SOLD

Saturn 167 with VG , white with green under leading edge. Less than 100 hours, near excellent condition. New nose cone, spare downtube, split wheels. The Saturn is highly regarded for its excellent glide, slow stall speed and resistance to PIOs. There are several in the club. Compare to WW Sport 2....

Leaving the sport

With all the interest in luring new people to the sport, it may be of passing interest why somebody retires from hang gliding. On the whole I'm not a standard cse. I started at age 60. For the record, age was not an impediment. I have now about 75 hours in almost four years, and enjoyed the ride. I ...
