Central Cal flying

Post by gregangsten »

Did a little trip up north awhile back and flew Tollhouse and Dunlap with very nice flights in both spots. Ron Jones lives right near the LZ and is the guy to talk to about flying there. He showed me a spot to spend the night up there and arranged a driver when 3 of us went up to fly one day. Info for both sites with contacts and rules, etc. here: http://www.cchpc.club/

Went to Dunlap the next day and hooked up with a group from Santa Barbara camping at the new Dunlap LZ. Disputes and problems with the original launch and LZ are many and a long story, but Ryan Soares and his father, Bob have made it their business to keep the flying alive there. Along with backing from other area pilots, they did an incredible amount of work building a new road to a new launch through a forest of manzanita. Trees and brush were cleared at the LZ as well and now it is very useable, if a little hard to see from up high. After flying all around the valley at up to 7k, I understood what drove them to do all that work. The new LZ has a very friendly landowner, Verna, who also volunteers as a driver for 10 bucks a head. The SB crowd gave her a $300 donation to camp there for the weekend and she even provided breakfast burritos on Sunday.

If you want to go there, start at the website above with Dunlap info here:
