SoCal XC League 2014 Announcements

Post by AaronColby »

Hi guys, Aaron Price from the SoCal XC League here. I wanted to share some of the exciting announcements for the 2014 XC League that I'm working on! I know most pilots at Sylmar are hang gliders but the XC and Sprint league are open to both HG and PG pilots so come on out and check out some new sites and meet some new people!

This year there will be two leagues, the XC league designed for intermediate to advanced XC pilots and the Sprint league designed for pilots just getting into XC flying. The new Sprint league is aimed at high-end P2s (though site restrictions may apply) and low end P3s that want to practice flying XC tasks with minimal amounts of stress. To be eligible for the Sprint league you must be flying an EN-B glider or lower. Check out the rules section of the SoCal site for all the details. Registration for both leagues is now open here:

Secondly I will be running XC Task Clinics that are aimed at bootstrapping individuals who have never flown a task before with the information they need. This clinic may be useful for both Sprint and XC league participants since the talks will be centered around task specific information. The XC clinic will be about 3 hours in the morning and in the afternoon we will go up to launch and fly an actual Sprint task. Clinic dates are Saturday, March 15th and Saturday, May 24th. These two clinics will offer identical information. Cost is $50 which includes ride to launch, retrieve and sprint task fee but not site dues. If the weather on the Saturday is not good then we will try to roll it over to Sunday. Minimum 3 attendees for the clinic to occur otherwise it will just be a Sprint task with no clinic. I know there are some fancy and expensive GPS units out there for flying tasks but most smart phones are now more than capable of running sophisticated gliding apps that can program a task and record a track log, so no excuses. For those that choose this route I'll spend some time on setup and usage of these apps in the clinic.

Registration is now open for the XC Task Clinic:

Finally, we'll be having a Kick off party for the league on Saturday, March 15th at Marshall. This will coincide with the first XC Task Clinic in the morning and the first Sprint Task in the afternoon. Come on out and meet some new friends and share in some food and drink afterwards!

The first XC League event will be the following weekend, March 22-23, in Santa Barbara if the weather holds. If not we will have Kagel and Marshall as alternate sites.

Cheers,
Aaron Price

Weekend Update

Post by AaronColby »

Saturday we will be at Marshall, I'll be in the LZ at 10am and heading to launch around noon.

I'll make the call for Sunday on Saturday afternoon. If it's taskable in Santa Barbara that's our first choice, if not we'll either stay at Marshall or if enough pilots ask for it we may mosey over to Kagel to say hi! Chances are if we joined up with y'all there would only be 6-10 of us so don't expect a giant in swell of bags ;)

Cheers,
Aaron
