Hoping For More Rain, LA County ‘Seeds’ Storm Clouds

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — As two winter storms approached the Southland in recent days, LA County officials were hoping to squeeze as much rain as possible from the fast-approaching storm clouds.
In a bid to fill depleted reservoirs, the LA County Department of Public Works is “cloud seeding.�
It works like this: Tubes mounted on hillsides shoot microscopic silver iodide particles into the clouds. Water vapor attaches to those particles, freezes and drops to the ground as rain.

Kerjon Lee with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works looks at a remotely operated cloud-seeding generator at the Kinneloa facility in Pasadena where a mixture of components are released into the atmosphere during rain events, hopefully causing more rain to fall. If everything goes as planned, reservoirs behind the Big Tujunga, Morris and several other dams, plus groundwater recharge facilities, could capture an average of an additional 1.5 billion gallons of storm water a year. That’s enough drinking water for 36,000 people.
