they are still out there

I got a pair of new PG boots. I thought I would break them in by hiking up the bench. On the way back down I was passing through a part of the trail that was about 35 cm wide with scrub brush on either side about a meter high. I heard a rattle. It was two fast steps before I could slow enough to turn around and look. I never saw the snake, but from the noise it was only 25 cm off the trail. I was glad I was wearing tall boots. However, I am not a good scientist which allowed me to not test my hypothesis. Later when I was walking out the road. Two deer crossed not a 100 meters in front of me. Guess it was my lucky day.
