When Low Cloudbase is Really Fun!
Thursday, May 25, 2023. Cloud base dropped to 3600' by the time we were ready to launch but didn't get much lower. The air was mostly smooth and molasses-like with weak to decent lift. In spite of the obstacles it was possible to reach the end of Lances and fairly close to west Towers. Enjoy the exc...

Re: Enno Roellgen's Accident
A friendly reminder to be aware of gliders in our surroundings when we fly. I launched maybe five minutes after Enno and the other PG. They had lost around 800' together and had begun to climb opposite each other as I launched my HG. As I worked the modest lift in front of launch I used the 2 PGs as...

Scenes from Spring Air Open Task on Sport Class Glider
See how far I grovelled when I flew my sport class glider in a challenging open class task. Okay, I made the second tag of Big T at ridge height and crossed back to Lances kind of low. I landed by the NE corner of the cemetery circle. 3:15hrs edited down to 10 min: https://youtu.be/C_UvCH2oIXA https...

Re: Rattlesnake season
May 22, 2022, Wisconsin Paul died from a rattlesnake bite while hiking on a trail a few miles East of Andy Jackson Airpark. His cell phone did not have a signal due to his location. I never fly without my SPOT 4 GPS tracker. If I am bitten I'll hit the SOS button. Here's the rattler that was keeping...

Victor Airway Encounter - Saturday
Just a friendly reminder to be mindful of the Victor airway that runs on a 170° angle from North to South directly over the Pacoima Dam. Friday was a very good day with a tandem at 7K and 3 solo HGs from 8.5 to 10.8K in various locations. As I crossed from Kagel toward Towers Launch at ~8550', a pis...

Re: Near midair-collision over Kagel ridge on Sunday 12/19/2021
Wasn't there a the mid-air the preceding week between a P4 & H2 w/ helicopter extraction of the injured P4? Even when pilots are aware of one another, mismatched wings can result in aerial collisions. https://youtu.be/IAGBLxm_yZI?t=79 This mid-air a Crestline resulted in a tumble, deployment, bo...

Re: Near midair-collision over Kagel ridge on Sunday 12/19/2021
Thanks for the report. It happened so freaking fast that I mistook the near approach at 50-sec for the near-collision at 44sec. I had to slow it down and zoom in, in order for it to even register for me and to better program my mind to avoid such a near-disaster in the future. There's no need to ass...
