World Capital of Hang Gliding? WTF?

Post by jcflies »

Where did this come from? The 70s? We are most definitely NOT part of any world circuit. It seems a little goofy to try and glorify our site that way.
Don't get me wrong, I love this site, but it is not part of any international scene. We should get rid of that little phrase on our home page--or, at the very least, add FORMER to it...

"World capital of endlessly protracted arguments" is way more apt!

Oh, it's a simple type-o. Should read "capitol."

Our gazebo structure is the world capitol of hang gliding.

for comming up with a good compromise.

Yeah -

"World Capital" is a little pretentious.

How about, "Cradle of California Free Flight?"

"Birthplace of the Air Gods?"

"Manger of Heathen Hedonism, involving foot-launched aviation and some beer?"

"Holy City of Our Lady of Perpetual Airtime?"

"Shrine of the Sky Gods?"

"Womb of Wondering Wuffos?"

"Uterus of Unending Utube videos by Jonathan?"

Its hard to shake a name once you've been given it. Try renaming Lawn Dart to Bunker Buster.

""Birthplace of the Air Gods?"

"Shrine of the Sky Gods?"

How about "Mount Olympus"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Olympus
In Greek mythology Olympus was regarded as the "home" of the Twelve Olympian gods of the ancient Greek world.[4] It formed itself after the gods defeated the titans in the Titan War, and soon the palace was inhabited by the gods. It is the setting of many Greek mythical stories. Olympus was not shaken by winds nor ever wet with rain, nor did snow fall upon it, but the air is outspread clear and cloudless, and over it hovered a radiant whiteness.

Its only a coincidence that its Greek and we're both broke.

All levity aside, boys, it IS false advertising. We don't have a product to sell, we don't need to lie to pull people in. We AREN'T the world capital of our sport. It's embarrassing.

So, Janyce, if not one of Larry's inspirations (I have special affection for "Womb of Wondering Wuffos" or maybe "Wandering..."), what would you have as the tag line?

Andyland?

Janyce's Jump?

What's your point? And, if not Sylmar, perhaps the only continuously flown site since 1969, near the birth of the sport, then where?

It isn't advertising, it isn't a product, it's fun... enjoy it.

Or boycott Kagel and take your business elsewhere; that'll show us.

A line like one of Larry's would be great--something that pays tribute to the site's history without going overboard! I don't know, without doing research, which site is the true world capital, and I'm not really interested in finding out, but I know it's not Sylmar. My point is merely that we have a false claim on the home page of our website--nor more, nor less! i wanted to call attention to that fact. I would have left it at that if the responses weren't a gigantic IUD in the sky and other inanities. I don't understand why I am being personally attacked for having pointed this out.

SHEESH! a bit tetchy!

Maybe this should be expanded.

Its hard to find a history of hang gliding in southern California on the internet but I have seen scattered pictures and stories just nothing in one place.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_hang_gliding
Then get it added to this site.

In 1971, the Southern California Hang Gliding Association was born. Through steady evolution of the sport, today we are known as the United States Hang Gliding Association, with a membership base worldwide.

If we advertise some "real" prize money for the Dahlston Cup we might get a larger turnout of National or International pilots and some Press.
