Pilots

Post by Don »

10 Pilots launched Garlock - 2 landed in the primary l/z, 3 landed down range a few miles, and 5th (Adam, myself, Oscar, BJ, and Max in that order) made it the 40 miles to Trona Airport. BJ, on his ~5 flight of the year, pulled off a few low saves and made the entire trip on a Falcon 2. :o

Tom Casper cancelled at the last minute and consequently could not prove that his earlier flight to the Trona Airport in a Falcon 3 was NOT a fluke (next time Tom).

Pilots reported max altitudes of 13K with temps of about 35 degrees. :o

I haven't downloaded my flight but airtime was about 2:05 with sink rates ranging from 600' - 1,200'+ fpm being common. Glide ratios were sometimes in the 6-7/1 ratio and that was on a Litespeed S :?

Way to go guys! I wish I could have been there. But with all the sneezing I was doing yesterday I would have needed a windshield wiper on the inside of my visor. I'll be there next time.

Nice job, guys!
Are we going to see some of the cross country footage, Oscar? Thanks in advance.

It all looks the same as what I posted earlier .
My Max Altitude was 13,141 and I averaged 10,000' except for my 2 low saves and my camera quit recording half way through the flight, but I believe Adam's Driver recorded the launches and landings ,We'll just have to wait and see.

Any idea as to what the altitude of the LZs are out there?
(Curious as to what the AGL was there.)

Way to go, guys. Wish I could have been there. I still need to redeem myself from the last Garlock trip. Ah well...there will be other trips. See you then!

Boring Statistics

Post by Don »

For those interested in boring statistics - these came from downloading my flight into CompeGPS. The following are the majority of my Climbs and Glides:

Climb: 246'per min, 71 turns, 26:41 duration, 6,578'net climb
Glide: -410' ave sink, 6:1 Glide ratio, 9:10 duration, 4.2 miles
Climb: 331' per min, 43 turns, 14:59 duration, 4,951' net climb
Glide: -400' ave sink, 9:1 Glide ratio, 6:57 duration, 4.6 miles
Climb: 197' per min, 40 turns, 20:42 duration, 4,071' net climb
Glide: -492' ave sink, 7:1 Glide ratio, 4:03 duration, 2.8 miles
Climb: 597' per min, 11 turns, 3:42 duration, 2,208' net climb
Glide: -250' ave sink, 15:1 Glide ratio, 13:40 duration, 9.3 miles
Climb: 203' per min, 5 turns, 2:10 duration, 440' net climb
Glide: -478' ave sink, 7.6:1 Glide ratio, 7:07 duration, 4.9 miles

This was on a Litespeed S. I generally flew slower than Best Glide and with no or only 50% VG (I got popped/rocked a couple times - control became more important that glide ratio). My lowest AGL was about 3,500' so there were no "low saves".

I can't even imagine what BJ's statistics were on a Falcon - although he was using Joe's 5030 so the information is/was available.

Having sunk out and landing in the main LZ :x, and playing chase for BJ, I need to get back up there and redeem myself as well.

Congratulations again on making goal, Don. Nice work. From the looks of your vario output, you were definitely working it. Whew!

Good info to know. Your data sets reasonable expectations for impatient pilots like myself. I was spoiled in Valled de Bravo, Mexico. The average thermal was giving off more than 1,100 fpm up. I hit 1,500 fpm a couple of times. Talk about spoiled.

What an exciting flight! There were moments where my vario said 800ft a minute drop. I don't have CompeGPS to give any statistics, but you can see the flight or download my igc. file here: http://www.xcontest.org/world/en/flight ... 2010/19:24
That flight was pure luck; I'm kicking myself for not buying a Lotto ticket that night.

John (Southside) flew 50 miles. There was some kind of sink hole in this area (where we both landed), so we must fly deeper in the mountains instead of front range.

Congratulations for Adam, Don, Oscar, BJ, and you Max!

Very nice flying BJ! You got back up from 600 and then 700' AGL. Looks like a fun flight after that. Maybe we can nickname Oscar "Polar Bear"? :P
