Flights

Post by Frederick »

Can we post our flight results here? It'd be nice to see what others are submitting. Kind of like seeing how you're doing relative to the pack, despite flying on separate days.

Also, can we have the scoring methods posted here, so we can plan our strategies ahead of time? A few people have told me they'd like that. The posting about the comp says something about scoring being released specifically for each period.

Questions and Answers about the Summer Comps

Post by Christian »

Don Banas answers questions about the Summer Comp:

Q: I'm a H2 on a Falcon, what chance do I have against the hotshots?

You should be competitive with H3s and H4s due to handicap scoring. You need to fly within the limits set by your instructor, of course, since flying safely comes first. But a Falcon may actually have an advantage in flying duration. My 5:05 flight was on a Falcon!

Q: How important is just staying up a long time?

There are two prizes for flight time. One is for the single longest flight, and the other is for the combined length of your best flights in each sub-comp.

Q: Why is Big T only worth 5 points when Locals is worth 25 points? Isn’t Big T a much longer flight?

I anticipate that only H4s are going to be able to get to Big T. If they want to be "competitive" with H2s and H3s they have to go to the "far reaches" to compensate for their handicap rating and high performance glider type.

Q: How can I tell who’s entered in the comp so I can cover them?

Ask around! Also, I will be publishing periodic updates in the Pilot Forum on who has entered and their results. Hopefully H4s and H3s will advise H2s on the best method to reach Trash & Locals, and H3s will learn some of the secrets that have made our comp pilots successful in national and international competitions.

Q: How serious are you about the 72-hour flight-log reporting rule?

Timely reports allow me to post competitors’ status during each comp. Otherwise someone could keep their flight logs until the end and "surprise" people.

Q: Can I submit multiple flight logs for each sub-comp? ? Should I?

Absolutely. Only your highest score will count and the others will be discarded. That puts a “twist in the scoring, however. Consider the following scenario: A pilot submits a Flight Log for Sub-Comp #1 with a score of 50 points and an airtime of 5 hours. A few days later the pilot submits a Flight Log with 60 points and an airtime of 1 hour. According to the rules, the first Flight Log will be discarded – along with the 5-hour airtime. The "twist" requires that the pilot decide whether they are going for the points prizes or the flight airtime prize(s).

How would a Falcon give you a duration advantage??

I believe Don Banas means simply that Falcon pilots are of more heroic fiber, are better looking, and have God on their side. But let's ask Don.

The early returns are in !

Jeff Craig was the first to email his results - sorry Jeff, no money for the category of being first to submit a flight. Malury Silberman submitted a Flight Log for his 7/12 flight then followed that up with another flight on 7/14. 7/14's flight was the same score but longer time.

Here's the standings:

Points:

Malury Silberman - 70 points
Jeff Craig - 45 points

Airtime:

Jeff Craig - 2:36
Malury silberman - 2:30

Remember to submit your Flight Logs - I'll update soon - I'm expecting a deluge of submissions :D

Time Limit for submitting Flight Logs temporarily suspended

Post by Don »

To encourage as many pilots as possible to join the fun - do we really only want three pilots to win all the prizes  the 72 hour limit for submitting flight logs has been suspended temporarily.

Any flight from Kagel since 7/5/06 is eligible. Just go back to your log book, flight instrument, or even your memory and record the data. Send to me via fax at 626-457-3320 or email to dbanas at eastwestbank dot com.

Where are all the H2s ?

Where are all those H3s ??

And where are all those H4s ???

You pilots not interested in money ????? :o
