Summer Competition - Sub Comp #3

Post by Don »

Sub Comp #3 covers the period 8/16 through 9/5. This is your last chance to score points / airtime and "take home the money" :D

The waypoints and scoring will be the same as Sub Comp #2 as follows:

Locals - 15 points
Towers - 10 points
Camp 9 - 10 points
1500 - 10 points
West Towers - 5 points
East Trash - 10 points
Lances - 10 points
Little T - 10 points
Big T - 10 points

H2 = 15 points, H3 = 5 points, H4 = 0 points
(High Hour H2's are scored as a H3)

Glider sliding scale (e.g. single surface (Falcon) = 10 points, topless = 0 points)

Good Luck - see you in the air

Don, would you consider adding some points for highest altitude achieved this time? Might add a new fun factor....

Here are some more ideas for "extra credit" :

Sub Comp #3 Extra Points

1.) Before launching did you:

a) Check conditions, using all available online sources?: 1 point
b) Check conditions by asking experienced pilots?: 3 points
c) Check conditions by using a windmeter and timing cycles?: 6 points
d) Checking conditions by kicking some dust, and then
asking Erwin?: 9 points

2.) After launching did you:

a) Go immediately for the house thermal?: 1 point
b) Remember your radio battery is still in the charger?: 3 points
c) Remember to do your hook-in check?: 6 points
d) Fly the wrong way in a thermal, and when the other pilots yell at you,
think that it’s no wonder hang-gliding is dying?: 10 points

3.) When you broke a downtube “on landing, what did you do next?

a) Cross the street and buy a new one right away at Windsports,
telling Joe you just need an “extra one for an
out-of-town trip?: 3 points
b) Surf hang-gliding websites to see if your old Altair downtube will fit
your Talon, just by “crimping it a little: 7 points
c) Tell everybody looking that it has been that way since you "wrangled
that dust-devil in 'Mae-Hee-Co'": 10 points

4.) When you landed, how many messages did your wife/girlfriend/life-
partner leave on your cell phone while you were flying?

0-3: 12 points
4-6: 10 points
7-10: 6 points
10+: immediate disqualification, go home and clean the garage.

5.) After submitting your score did you:

a) Immediately call your wife/girlfriend: 0 points
b) Immediately watch the shuttle launch on T.V.: 1 point
c) Sit on bench in L.Z. and make loud predictions about “epic conditions
for the next day: 3 points (slurring while doing so: extra 1 point)
d) Ride home on your motorcycle, (splitting lanes): 10 points and
1 free waypoint

Seems like there should be a 'handicap' for using a knee-hanger harness!!
(have you ever tried going for long periods of time in a knee-hanger harness)

I've done numerous 3+ hour flights in a knee hanger - dare I say that I find/found the Z5 NOT to be that much more comfortable. With the knee hanger - you can easily flex your knees and generally more about alot more. Then there is the significant advantage of landing with a knee hanger.

Although I'm grateful to be in first place (for now) I wanted to mention that I think my "Total Airtime" from Comp 2 is inaccurate. I think it should total 5:50. Can we have an auditor look in to it?

You don't add all of your times together from within the Comp 2. The way that I read the rules are that your times/points that are used towards the score is the latest flight that you submit for each Comp.
(the way that the rules 'seem' to be written, since the flight that you submitted on Aug 13, 2006 was your latest one submitted for Comp 2, you would't get you any points for way places tagged (none tagged) and you would only get 14 minutes for the Comp 2 portions of the total Comp.)
(But then that's only the way that I read the writing in the 'rules' for the Comp.)

Allen

P.S. - I'm also wondering how many of the actually minutes that are being used for the flights are actual flight minutes and not just time that the vario was on. I seem to 'hear' varios way before the actual launch time and way after the actual landing time. I know that not all varios automatically start the 'clock' at the actual time of the launch and stop the 'clock' at the actual time of the landing. Myself, I turn my vario on right after my last hook-in check (about 30 sec before launch) and within 30 sec after I land.

Varios

Post by Malury »

Allen, I'm not sure about the accumulated airtime, perhaps you are right about that. I faxed a few reports early in Comp 2 and I wonder if they were included. It's not critical cause i'm far ahead . (for now)

As for varios; I always treat mine like you do, for accuracy. Once launched I check the time and later subtract Launchpotato time. I've been told that better varios dont start the clock till their GPSs recognize movement.

Its saturday...going flying?

2nd Blackhawk Flight

Post by Malury »

Flight Date: 8/20/06 2nd Blackhawk Flight of the day.

Pilot Name: Malury Silberman

Rating: H-2.91 and holding!

Glider Make/Model Flown: Falcon 2 195

Total Flight Time:8 minutes...Rob Burgess' record is safe for now!

Waypoints tagged None

Did you land in the LZ?: No, Bad inflight decisions! I got too low in front of east launch at Blackhawk and I was lucky to dodge trees and cactus and land it hard on the upslope of a mountain. It was hard to retrieve me, and I wrecked a downtube. I pulled it off this time but I dont recommend it.
