Dahlsten Cup Chili Contest!

By Richard Seymour

Amongst the many attractions of what is the arguably
the most important yearly club function, the Dahlsten
Cup, is the auxiliary competition known as the Chili
Cook-off!

The first year we had six entries submitted by three people.
Cabbagehead won first prize with his killer LZ
(lizard) Chili. There was some controversy over the results,
with a protest from one of the contestants about
suborning judges and bribing with homebrew.

The next year ( 2005) had a tremendous turnout with 14
chilis submitted by eight contestants. This event was
won by Bruce Kovac with his sweet Honey Elk Chili.
There was more controversy about alleged cheating, and
deliberately misleading rules. Also there were more allegations
of bribing with homebrew.

Therefore, it is determined that THIS year ( 2006) there
will be a cleaned up contest overseen by the United Nations
Fair Elections Committee, fresh from monitoring
the Mexican presidential election.

Here are the new rules and advice, and those of you who
wish to enter your personal best chili and stomp the
competition into the ground should pay attention.

1) You may submit one or two chili entries.

2) Your chili must be in some kind of electric heated
crockpot, and it must arrive at the LZ HOT and
ready to go. Last year people brought their chili(s)
cold, and it took hours for them to heat up. The club
will do its best to provide electric cords and terminal
strips. However, you might want to bring your
own strip just in case.

3) You must bring your HOT chili no later than 2pm.
Or thereabouts. Remember, if you bring your chili
late, dozens of people have already been scarfing
down other people’s chili and voting. Please bring a
nice big serving spoon as well.

4) The chilis in their crockpots will be lined up in order
of when they arrive and are ready to serve. If
you bring your HOT chili at 11 am, before anyone
else, it’s number ONE in the serving line.

5) The entries will have numbers, but ownership will
remain anonymous. However, if you are serving,
and wink at anyone who requests your chili, who’s
gonna know?

6) The Chili Contest is designed to give people something
to eat during the early ( lunch) hours of the
Dahlsten Cup. It is not designed to replace the main
dinner, even though that might happen. That is why
we start serving chili at 1pm.

7) Please label your entry either HOT or MILD,
MEAT or VEGGIE.

8) The Chili Contest is free, but donations welcome.
The customary donation is one dollar per 4 oz. serving, or 5 dollars
for as many 4 oz servings you want.

9) The club will provide all bowls, spoons, plates, napkins etc. as
well as cheese, onions, hot peppers and a ton of chips.

10) You do not have to be there to serve your chili. The servers, who
have sworn an oath ( on the Bible, the Koran, and the Book of
Morman) to be impartial, will serve the chili while you fly.

11) The general public will vote on their favorite chilis for 1st, 2nd &
3rd place. They will use printed ballots that they will drop off in
the ballot box. The Chili Contest ends at 5pm.These ballots will
be tabulated by a panel of three impartial judges who have not
entered any chili in the contest. The judgments of the three
judges is final and there is no appeal. No sore losers! Don’t come
to me after the event and complain about the results. It’s not my
fault that you lost. I did not cheat (this year) no matter what anyone
says.

Dahlsten Cup contests

Post by Ken Andrews »

There will be several flying contests on the day of the Dahlsten Cup. All pilots are automatically entered for the spot landing contest and the Golden Dart award. Pilots may also sign up to enter any one of three classes of cross-country races: the Open Class, the Sport Class, and the Fun Class. The winner of the Open Class wins the Cup. Participation is open to USHPA members with H3/P3 ratings and above, and H2/P2 ratings with instructor permission. GPS units are required for these races, so bring a GPS, bring extras if you have them, and arrange to borrow one if you don't. Jeff Chipman is doing the scoring; many thanks.

Spot Landing Contest

Rule: Distance is measured to the point of first weight-bearing contact; the pilot with the closest well-executed landing wins.

Golden Dart Award

Rule: The best whack wins. Judging is based upon quantity of bent aluminum, injuries, and general style. It's not always clear which of these are attributes and which are detriments.

Open Class Race

Eligibility: Any flex-wing glider may be flown. A GPS is required.

Contest: This will be a standard cross-country race. A task committee will meet in the morning to evaluate weather conditions and select the course, probably consisting of an entry-start cylinder, a lap or two along the mountains, and a goal-cylinder. Scoring will be done via GPS tracklog, using the GAP2002 scoring system. This rewards distance accomplished, speed for those making goal, and other factors.

Sport Class Race

Eligibility: Any glider may be flown, rigid, topless or kingposted flex-wing, paraglider, or Batso. A GPS is required.

Contest: This will be a cross-country race with handicap based on glider type. Just as with the Open Class race, a task committee will meet and select the course, probably consisting of an entry-start cylinder, one lap along the local mountains, and a goal-cylinder. Scoring will be done via GPS tracklog, using the GAP2002 scoring system and a multiplier based on glider type. Details of the handicap system are still being worked out.

Fun Class Race

Eligibility: Single-surface hang gliders or paragliders may be flown. A GPS is required.

Contest: This is a turnpoint accumulation race. A task committee will select and announce a collection of turnpoints or "destinations". The pilot who reaches the greatest number of these wins (i.e. gets within a pre-announced distance of each, probably 1/4 mile). In the event of ties, the pilot with the shortest time between the first and the last turnpoints visited wins.

GPS Notes

Jeff Chipman has had some problems downloading tracks form GPS76 Map CSX units recently, so avoid this model if possible. Chip and I have download cables for standard Garmin, Garmin eTrex, and Flytek 5030 GPS units. If you have a different GPS, please bring a download cable if you can!

GPS Use

The Dahlsten Cup races will be scored by downloading GPS tracklogs to a computer. This means that each pilot must fly with a GPS, and an invalid tracklog disqualifies the pilot. You may wish to read about The Care and Feeding of GPS Units.

Scoring

Scoring for the Open and Sport classes will be done using the GAP2002 system. While the details are complicated, the way to get the best score is to fly as much of the course as you can, and if you finish the entire course, then finish fast. A few bonus points are also awarded to pilots who lead the way, and who finish early.

For pilots who do not complete the course, the score will be determined by the distance accomplished along the course (plus perhaps a few points for a leading bonus). This is the course distance to the first missed turn-point, minus the pilot's distance to that turn-point at his closest approach.

Those who complete the course get full distance points, plus points determined by elapsed time (plus a small arrival bonus and leading bonus). During the launch window (the main part of the day), there will be start gates every quarter hour, on the quarter hour. A pilot's elapsed time is measured from the start gate preceding the time the start cylinder was last entered, to the time when the finish cylinder was first entered. The purpose of the 15-minute start gates is to nullify the advantage gained by departing shortly after another pilot and following him.

Those who wish to know more about the GAP2002 scoring system could read the GAP2002 User Guide.

Dahlsten Cup Postponed to Sunday
Saturday is forecast to have north winds again, but Sunday looks flyable for a change! Hence the Dahlsten Cup will be postponed one more day to Sunday, October 29.

Work Party on Saturday
Our Kagel Road work party isn't affected by winds, so please come out and help on Saturday morning. Prepare to leave the LZ at 9:00 for a ride up, or at the end of the Kagel dirt road at 9:30.
