The fines are large, and the test is not all that hard. Heck, they GIVE you all the possible questions, and the answers to them. You just have to study them.

For those who don't know, the rating you want is No-code Technician. (Does anyone take the code technician any more? Is it even available anymore?) In any case, it is a fairly easy test if you study for a few hours. And the license is good for something like 9 or 10 years!

i have the study guide/question pool book gathering dust if anybody wants it. maybe i'll just bring it to the lz this weekend.

I'm just curious how the FTC would actually catch/identify the individual(s) that don't have a license? Do they record the conversation and then "run around" checking voices?

Curious Minds want to know???

There are no morse code requirements anymore for any level of license, even the Coast Guard does not monitor CW.

Make sure you are using the latest question pool, the question pool changed July 1, 2008 and if you need help studying go see George “have I told you I am a hang five� Stebbins, he knows it all…..

The license is good for 10 years, not a bad deal for something that cost $14 american.

bottom line, just ID if you have a call sign and do not use the freq if you dont.

Excuse me for daring to agree with Barton and try and encourage people to do what he asked. Maybe he doesn't know what to do when I agree with him.... ;-)

And for the record, I haven't mentioned what my rating is in years, unless specifically asked.

But all that aside, Barton is right. Get legal or stay off the radio. Getting legal is easy. And if you ARE legal, use your call sign every 10 minutes, as required. I have seen the FCC fine people, and/or confiscate radios.

Hang gliders are moving transmitters and can thus move out of range of anyone monitoring them as was the case the other weekend in th LZ.

Pilot A was out of range of the LZ but pilot B was in range of the LZ, and pilot B was in communication with pilot A.
