Rc Flying

Hey guys I fly a Radio control Glider. It is a all foam glider with no motor. I have flown at your launch site up kagel truck trail in the past. There were a few of you guys up there last time I went maybe a year ago and no one seemed to mind me being there. Some one even told me it was nice because you could see what the wind was doing before launching. Well to get to the point I tried to go last weekend and there is now a locked gate. I was wondering if there was anyway I could get the combo to the gate. I realize you guys are putting your selves out there and make sure to stear clear of any manned gliders. It is such a nice place to fly and so close to home I would love to be able to take advantage of it.

I don't think that you're going to have much luck in getting the combo for the lock. The gate/trail is now supposed to only be used by the Forest Sevice and members/hang gliders of SHGA and their drivers.

Unfortunately, it only took a few off-roaders that didn't seem to care about the conditions that they were leaving the area in when they were done, to ruin it for other people that may of been very considerate and careful with the terrain and area.

If you were willing to go up and down on the schedule of the HG/PG Pilot's, I'd bet you could get them to take you up. Just a thought. (They'd probably charge the standard rate, whatever that is for their vehicle, but then you'd not have to mess up your vehicle on the road.)

And you might not be able to take the larger planes. Space in the back might (or might not) be at a premium.

Still, it is worth a try. I guarantee you we don't mind you being there. The issue is solely that we are not supposed to let others have the combo. We have all those socially irresponsible folks who trashed the place to thank for that. Clearly that isn't you or us, but they are out there, oh yes they are.... And our use of the site is on the line right now. I'm sure you understand.

WHo gives the permission to go up there. I wonder id I call the forest service or whoever that may be and told them my plan they might be willing to give me the combo. I dont see any difference in what im doing and what you guys are doing exept my flights are unmanned. But I will not do anymore damage to the ground than you guys.

Your best bet may be to become a driver. You get to ride up for free, get paid $20 for driving someone's truck down, and it usually takes us 2 hours to set up. Plenty of flying time for you. And gratitude. If you don't know where the flight park is, find the map on the SHGA home page.

The Forest Service will NOT give you the combination; we change it monthly anyway and you won't have access unless you become a member, your only other legitimate option. $100 initiation, $60/year. Driving is far better for you and your vehicle.

Warning: if you think you can fool us by driving once to get the combo and then going up on your own, we are under a mandate from the Forest Service to turn in unauthorized vehicle owners. If your aren't driving for us, you are unauthorized.

Maybe the Forest Service will give you the combo to their lock. Give them a call and ask for Ranger Smith. Just tell him you're friends with Yogi and he'll hook you up.

The thing that makes this launch site great for me is the fact that it is freeway close. I am a father with 4 young children and get very little time away to do my hobby. I would love to drive for you guys but i just dont have the time. When I get away it is usually for just an hour or two.

The forest service has closed this road and access is by permit only. The SHGA negotiated a permit with the Forest Service and we are under very strict guidelines on road use. Our club does not wish to risk losing our permit and therefore the only way to go up would with one of our pilot groups on their way to launch.

Sorry, for the hassle but this issue was caused by off-roading vehicles that were operated improperly forcing the forest service to close the road.
