1989-07-13: Katherine YARDLEY (USA) sets the past world record of 163.8 mi for Class 1 Hang Gliders, Feminine, Straight Distance at Lone Pine, CA (USA) with a Moyes Delta Gliders GTR.

Nice going

How many of us were even flying then? (I know I was and on a GTR as well).

Got a few of them record holders in the club, nice to rub elbows with such company.

I remember it well. At the following SHGA Club meeting, we presented Katherine with flowers and showered her with praise.

Well, Grant and Everyone Else...

I formally nominate Katherine Yardley for special USHPA Commendation.

Everyone,

I believe that Katherine Yardley's ongoing, selfless contribution to silent soaring qualifies her for notice. Not only because she is a World Record Holder but because she is former President of SHGA, long-time current member of SHGA Board of Directors AND, because she exemplifies the spirit of Hang Gliding! Please second my motion. I hope you will all agree and I will champion this commendation through the process to our larger governing body: United States Hanggliding Paragliding Association.

Otherwise, I will do this on my own!

it'd be awesome to fly with her (and all the other females pilots who don't fly so much these days!) hey! maybe we could have a female fly-in, inviting all the local hga female pilots we can find! like johnna from elsinore, and dexxa from crestline, and tammy and kari: we could deliberately make it late in the day in case they are new, injured, or haven't flown lately, but it would be fun and create a feeling of solidarity among our rapidly dwindling numbers! ????? lynn? one more social event for old times' sake? (i'd help...)

oops! it sounds like i meant HGs only; of course, any winged woman would be welcome--PGs, squirrel suits, base jumpers. (men too, for that matter!)

Lots of hot shot women pilots in the LZ ? What about my fragile male ego? Female pilots are a little intimidating, especially when they can out-fly me. But libido beats ego, therefore I vote yes! Ladies, come on down!

I think your suggestion is enticing... Hmmm, I'm gonna take you up on your offer! I think we can look at creating a Ladies Class as part of our Dahlsten Cup or Spring Air. We can talk about how that would play out because there are comp, recreational and pg pilots among us. The best pilot would earn the Yardley Cup (no comments from the guys, please!)

I won't even go there! I do agree that Katherine is very deserving of recognition for her unending contributions to our fine club. For her flying, for her cooking, for her unseen efforts as a Director and for her cheerful demeanor, we really should reward her !

I have been putting some thought into this. I think it would be cool if we integrate a Ladies Pro/Am class into our Spring Air Festival. We don't have enough lead time to integrate this idea into the upcoming Dahlsten Cup.
