BBQ Saturday July 26 for CNN

Hi Everyone!

I was asked to help organize a potluck BBQ for this Saturday in honor of the visit from CNN. We're figuring only on 40 people/stomachs since most advanced pilots will be in Yosemite this weekend.

We're planning a typical hamburger ordeal, and we'll need some contributions from people planning to fly this Saturday. If you could help by bringing some of the items below and either posting, pm'ing, or e-mailing me (benjamin_strand at yahoo.com) what you can bring, I'd greatly appreciate it. See below for a list of needs.

Alternatively, if you'd like to just donate some cash, e-mail me how much you'd like to contribute and I'll plan/buy accordingly; you can just give me the money on Saturday. I'll keep receipts and any extra funds will go to the club.

BJ - I sent you an e-mail but wanted to pst here in case you don't have access to your email.

Jacquie and I will be there Saturday and plan to bring Soda and Utensils.

BJ:
The club has all you need in terms of plates, cups, utensils, napkins in the "office". That's the locked space on the LZ side of the newer glider storage. You can ask any BOD member or Lisa for the combo. Go in and help yourself for this event. Most bins are labelled for your convenience.

Looks like your list of needed items is right on. I usually calculate that 1/2 of the guesstimated folks will have two entrees. So if you're expecting 40 people, you'd want 60 servings of entrees. Side dishes usually serve more than the number listed on the container. I feel certain that SHGA will reimburse you for any expenses so you can purchase items that no one volunteers to provide. Just keep your receipts and give them to me when all is done.

Hey Everyone!

While the barbecue is important, what's more important is that CNN wants to do a story on SHGA. What a COOL thing!

The genesis of the CNN story came about when a producer for Time Warner's SoCal News (Vincent Tayborn) contacted Joe Greblo. He asked if he could profile the Sylmar Hang Gliding Association and create a positiveâ€”â€œWow, look at thisâ€�â€”story on flying. Of course Joe said it would be a great idea and scheduled the filming to take place this Saturday, July 26 at approximately noon. Joe also thought we could show the crew a little hospitality by having one of our famous barbecues and BJ Strand volunteered to coordinate the meal.

Please come out Saturday and letâ€™s show CNN what kind of club we areâ€”and what an exciting sport hang gliding (and paragliding) is. The piece will air Â locally on CNN Headline News. Once we know the schedule, we'll post it here.

Woops! Went shopping today and some canteloupe and strawberries jumped into my cart, so I'll bring a green salad and a fruit salad .

Wonderful! Thanks so much for everyone who's contributing. I updated the list of volunteers. I'll go to Costco tomorrow and pick up the stuff still needed.

According to Ken, there's also a jar in the office that is used for cash contributions. We'll be sure to put that out too.

I think it went o.k. Plenty of burgers; I think there was 10 extra patties (out of 108), 2 extra watermelons, some extra lettuce and fruit salad, and even 10 extra bottles of beer that Ken Andrews and I had to put inside the club office. I wish people had eaten more. I still can't believe there was beer left over.

Special thanks to Katherine Yardley for all her efforts (and saving my fingers by cutting the watermelon), Jay and Heather Janda for their wonderful fruit and garden salads, Richard Shaw's wife (who also drove that day) for her potato salad, Steve Murillo and his wife for potato salad, soda and beer, Mike Ivey for the potato chips, Bill Brick and his girlfriend Jacquie (who also drove that day) for utensils, ice, soda and a giant red tub to put it in, Ken Andrews for helping with the clean up, and anyone else that I'm sure I missed.

I don't know about the CNN piece. The camera guys seemed friendly enough. Does anyone know when they air it?
