800 degree thermal in Ventura County

This strange spot in Ventura County has fire fighters baffled. Its 800 degrees but there is no fire. I wonder if a hang glider has tried to use it to thermal. Would it be hot enough to actually make a difference?

Allen King, the geologist mentioned in the story, was the Forest Service Regional Geologist who helped us with the Kagel Road washout in 2006.
