I miss the newsletter.
Now, don't get me wrong. This is a fine website, and it definately addresses a need, but it's not the same as getting that wrinkled, stapled paper thing in the mail every month (or two).
I realize that some people feel a newsletter delivered by snail mail is obselete, and that anything it offers can be duplicated by the website, but even if I concede that yes, indeed, that time may come, it has not come yet!
Historically, the newsletter costs were a significant part of the entire club yearly expenses, and I don't have a feel (yet!) what those expenses entail. I'll leave it to the Board to decide if they can still afford to print and mail 200 copies of a 4-8 page newsletter a half-dozen to a dozen times a year. My feeling is that they will go for it, but if they don't, I hope someone will inform me before I go to the printshop!
I believe very strongly that our club needs the newsletter to help us with our self-identity and internal cohesion. While the website provides an instant forum for all members on a wealth of (permitted) subjects, the newsletter focuses the entire membership's attention on priorities, problems, official Board actions and news in a more formal, presented, regular (and dare I say it, fun?) way.
I am attempting to learn a publishing software (Design & Print), with the ultimate goal of re-creating the High Times SHGA newsletter. However, because of my (un)employment history, it's never been nor is it now possible for me to commit to taking on the Editor job for more than an issue or two.What I'm going to do is put out ONE issue, and take it from there. I have been told by Ken, Rome and Gayle that they have enough materials for a couple of issues, and I have ideas for some regular columns. This first issue will not be a polished, professional thing like Lisa and Cindi used to put out,it will distinctly resemble the old newsletter formats from years gone past.
When will this thing come out?
I'm starting school in two weeks (don't ask), so I hope to have it ready for dragging down to Kinko's by the end of that period. You might see it (if my hand doesn't give out, handwriting with a Sharpie 200 addresses) a week later...
