What: LZ fire cleanup
When: Saturday October 18th, 2008 (1000)
Where: Your home away from home (The LZ)

THIS IS A CATERED EVENT (Croissant Sandwiches from Sams Club), planning on about 30 to 40 pilots. If your planning on attending please submit yes in the poll so we can get an idea on the number of people coming.

As you all may know the fire this last week finished the rest of the brush cleanup in a way that we could have never accomplished. Now we have an opportunity to finish some of what mother nature cannot do.

Joe Greblo saw to the cleanup and disposal of the wood chips that were causing potential fire hazards to the neighbors and the local community. Those are removed, scraped away and the landing approach and overshoot areas look way different (and bigger). We'd like to make a few improvements that will make the LZ even more safe, but we need manpower.

Some of the items we'd like to accomplish on Saturday include:

Replacing broken sprinklers
Hauling away scrap wood piles
Smoothing out the edge of our newly widened hang 2 landing area
Removal and disposal of uncovered barbed-wire and rebar
Moving smaller rocks out of the landing area
Putting up new LZ streamers
Painting the picnic tables between the storage bins
Painting speed bumps
Fixing chain link gate
Weatherproofing SHGA sign

The following items are contingent on getting access to the launch area

Pulling down the launch wind sock for replacement (will preserve old one maybe)
Clearing burnt brushes below launch
Replacing the burnt out railroad ties from launch ramp

What to bring:

Make sure you have clothes that can get REAL dirty. The LZ area and launch are really black so the ash and soot is likely to get your new tennis shoes not so new looking.
Bring gloves, hats, sun screen, bandana or face mask to try and keep your airway clean.
A couple of good chainsaws for those that want to go to launch
Tree trimming saws (launch crew)
A good attitude

Joe says we need some cart or trailer to haul away the wood and other trash (something like Mike Hayden brought last time).

Great idea to have it catered. Would you like me to pick up sodas and ice? How 'bout sides (potato salad, chips, etc.)?

FYI - I learned from beach party that pilots want 2 sandwich servings. Subway cut the 12" subs into thirds, so every pilot wanted 2/3 of a sandwich. That's more than subway figures in their number of servings.

Are there any specific tools people should bring?

Are there any specific "other" things we should bring?

Clearly, work-gloves are a good item, but anything else?

If your inclined to do so you can bring a "covered" dish.

We'll supply the chips and I think the soda and water. Beer will likely be there as always thanks to a few individuals who always provide.

I think deserts and salads will go over pretty well if your thinking about something to bring.

I will be there to help and hope to find my work gloves in my garage from our last project. I will be on my motorcycle and will not be bringing other tools. Will bring a good attitude and fresh muscles to help and would be happy to make a cash donation to help defray others costs if that is available.

The project list has grown into a major day of renovation. Jeff will post the complete list in the morning so everyone can bring the right tools. but it will including painting, sanding, fence repair, trash hauling, weed eating, tree trimming, just to name a few. If you've got a specialty, or tools for something that would help rejuvenate the l/z, the bring them, including nailing up, sanding and painting the wooden picnic tables, painting speed bumps, fixing chain link gate, weatherproofing SHGA sign.

OK, the food is all set and the Chipman family is bringing a pot of chili, potato salad and have all the sandwiches ready to pickup by 11:00. Still need sodas, drinks and deserts.

Now all we need is bodies. Greblo is calling for a major day of renovation but I'm not sure where we're going to get all the materials for the list he's compiling. Either way you should come on out an assist where you can.

I'll be there. I don't know how much help I'll be, I will have both kids and no wife to watch them. But I'm sure I can do something to help. Heck, maybe I can find some simple task the kids can do too!

Don't know what I'll bring for food/drink. I will bring some tools, including a wheelbarrow. And an electric tire pump. Last time I looked the club wheelbarrow had a flat. I suspect mine does too, but it just needs a pump-up. Big clippers too, and a shovel. Other stuff if I can think of it.

BTW, are the for the 200 foot line still ok? Do we need replacements? I can get a few. Last I looked they were $13 apiece. But that was two years ago. Let me know if we need some!

Kat (my wife) is making about 10 pounds of potato salad. Last time she made this it went so fast i didn't even get a taste. I also can donate 5 gallons of Thompsons water seal if needed.

OK here's the list of items that are on the wish list. We know that not all items will be accomplished but if you want to take on the task and cannot get it complete no problem, just would like to know who is willing to be responsible for the completion of the task.

Here's the deal, you should not expect any guidance on the accomplishments of these tasks. We need leaders to step forward and get er done. If there are any potential policy questions then of course seek guidance, however many of these tasks just need a person to take charge. This includes materials, many of the materials are inexpensive and we'll appreciate your donation of materials and labor for a long time. There are no materials being provided, but we are feeding you

Things already being taken care of :

Greblo rented a skip loader and accomplished the following on Friday:

Overshoot Area
Move boulders from overshoot area
Fill ravine in the overshoot
Clear brush (not like there was much more anyway)

White rock area (hang 2 landing area)
Move boulders (more need taken care of)
Widen runway (basically complete)
Fill ravines
Clear remaining brush (sticks)

Hang 3 Runway
Widen and smooth (basically done, still need some clean up)

Here's the rest of the wish list that need volunteers:

Replace broken sprinklers
Haul to dump (wood pile, cut tree wood, LZ junk, unusable coolers/containers, unusable barbecue tools, junk in lost and found, junk in phone booth, junk on soda machine.
Pull up exposed barbed-wire, rebar in the H2 runway (half way to the H4 landing area)
Pickup all dangerous rocks in wash runway
New streamers in the LZ (right now there are temporary ones)
Clean brush and groom park entrance outside gate
buy and spread rye grass seed over entire burned out areas. Then water down. (Try and get bird tolerant seed)
Nail or screw wooden picnic tables, sand and paint
Patch and paint speed bumps in parking lot
Repair chain link fence at gate
Chainsaw the stumps in Dinos Triangle (ask Darryl)
Weatherproof the SHGA entry sign and bulletin board
Flat shovel / scrape dirt and grassy edges of parking lot up against the wheel stops and around Erwins motor home
Clear the remaining brush against the SIBL fence and around the cactus garden
Tighten bolts on all picnic tables (wooden and metal)
Pickup bottle caps from grass
Trim shade trees and trees hanging over SIBL fence
Weed trim around oleanders
Remove aluminum stock pile from gazebo roof (Jim's Recycling center)
Clear and clean entire area between the storage sheds
Level deep tire ruts in grass and runway caused by fire trucks
Clean any graffiti from inside and outside the porta potties
Pickup bags, cups, and trash along the street (next to SIBL), especially so our neighbors can see us doing this

I'll have a sign up list in the LZ tomorrow

Things we need:
Sanding machines
Paint brushes and paint (for speed bumps and picnic tables, white paint for bumps, something earth tone like brown for the picnic tables)
Weed whackers (gas preferably)
Wire cutters strong enough for barbed-wire
wheel barrels
Tree trimming equipment
Waterproofing stuff for LZ sign

See you all tomorrow

We do have some coffee cake for the morning if someone could bring a bucket o coffee that would be fantastic

I have a GIANT coffee pot and will bring the coffee......do we have cups in the storage container???

Yes we have cups, thanks for bringing the coffee.

Others we need paint (white) and paint brushes for preserving the sign and painting the speed bumps.

Richard Shaw has brought the water sealer and a tree trimmer. I've brought a sweep broom and various tools (drills and socket set)
