WASH-OUTS ON KAGEL ROAD

SUN. I DROVE FOR GREBLO AND STOPPED TO WORK ON ROAD.THE SO.SIDE USFS DRAIN HAD A 3 INCH GAP, WITH H20 RUNNING UNDERNEATH PIPE, AND STARTING TO UNDERMINE IT. I STUFFED THE GAP WITH SANDBAGS. (IT WON'T LAST), AND TRIED TO DIVERT H2O TO THE SOUTH SIDE. YOU CAN SEE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. PLEASE HELP!!! IF THE ROAD EVEN PARTIALY WASHES OUT THE USFS WILL CLOSE THE ROAD, AND PUT IT ON THIER LIST, 6 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR. DO THE FRIGGEN WORK !! ROME

When Rome refers to the "Washout," he means the low spot on the Kagel Road where the road to Trash splits off. This is at the base of the last steep climb before launch(let's call it "Axlebreaker Hill") .

There is a huge canyon on the north side of the road at the Washout, threatening to undermine the road. Two years ago, we had a massive work party to divert surface water to the galvanized drain on the south side of the road. That worked well until the off-roaders used the slope to the south of the road for a hill climb. That made ruts that run straight up and down the hill, which channel surface water and erode into gullies.


The Regional Engineer for the Forest Service, a paraglider pilot named Alan King, recommended that two "rolling dips" be cut into "Axlebreaker." to divert water off the north side of the road.

A "Rolling dip" is a diagonal cut across the road, with a berm on the downhill side. The rolling dip directs surface water flow off the road, usually into a galvanized drain pipe, usually with a sheet metal funnel at the top. Those drain pipes are called "Big Macs" or "Little Macs," depending on the size. There is a rolling dip at the top of Axlebreaker, which drains into a Big Mac.

When we fixed "Chad's Ravine" in the road last year, we made a poor man's rolling dip our of rocks and sandbags at the top of that hill, to drain into a "Little Mac" on the south side of the road. It's working okay, so far.

In the two road gradings since the 2006 work party, no "rolling dips" have been cut into "Axlebreaker." Communication doesn't seem to be reaching the grader operator.

In cutting fire breaks during the recent fires, the Forest Service fire crews reconfigured the landscape at the Washout at the base of Axlebreaker. Now, water is flowing over the north side of the road again, and Rome reports that it is starting to undercut the road again.

The fire crews' work also wiped out the trench that we made to direct the surface water into the Big Mac on the south side of the road. The result is that there is a low spot in the road that used to become a lake before the 2006 work party. I fear that "Washout Lake" is back.

Rome also reports that the runoff is flowing under the Big Mac on the south side of the road, and will begin to undermine the south side of the road, as well. He made a temporary repair himself, folks.

We need someone to organize a work party that will be coordinated with the Forest Service, who can supply materials that are useful in erosion control. I organized it and coordinated with the Forest Service in 2006, and Joseph Vandertol was in charge of the coolies.

I'm willing to coordinate with the Forest Service and serve as project engineer, unless Mike Hayden, who has vast experience in roadwork volunteers as engineer.

Who will step up to organize this time??

That means setting a date and getting the bodies up the hill to work on the road for a half day, or maybe two half days.
